ICU psychosis. Doesn't that sound lovely?

According to my mom.  I guess thats what is causing him to be so confused.  He thinks he was in some sort of accident.  On Weds he had to have a procedure an they brought some equipment into his room.  The date was on a screen and I could see him looking at it confused.  It was 6/3/09.  He was put in a coma on 5/4.  And even yesterday the nurse wrote the date on the board and he'd just stare at it.  We told him before that he had been sedated, but it had made him scared to sleep, like he might lose another month out of his life.

ICU psychosis happens in 1 of 3 patients in ICU for more than 5 days (he's been in for nearly 4wks - 3 of those in a drug induced coma).  It usually resolves itself in 24hrs-2wks or upon discharge from the ICU.  Luckily they think they can transfer him out of the ICU next week. But they don't want to rush it.

My heart is still breaking.

    My 20 yr. old brother developed the same problem when he was in the ICU for a broken neck. It made him really mean and confused. I wish I could give you some advice but I have no idea how to make it better except getting him out of the hospital. There maybe some hospital social workers or patient advocates that can give you some tips to help your brother. When my brother was in the ICU I think they called his psychotic condition "daylighting".

    I am so sorry for him and your family.  On a different note, I am glad you posted this b/c it finally explains to me what happened to my Dad when he was in the hospital, he definitely had this but no one labeled it.
