Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Weight and STTN

So, my LO is 9 weeks and 10 lbs I am pretty impressed with his sleeping: bedtime ~8pm wakes up between 2-3 to eat goes right back to sleep and then up again 3ish hours later and usually up for the day around 7am.  The ped. said that most babies are STTN when they reach 12lbs.  What is your experience with this?  Just wondering if it is true in "the real world"

Thanks!

Re: Weight and STTN

  • DS is 10lbs. 14oz (last Friday) and sleeps from around 9pm-4:45am.

  • My DD STTN before she was 12 lbs.
  • DS is 13lbs and has the exact same schedule as your LO.  How does your pedi define STTN??  I only ask because technically our LO's are STTN since their first section of sleep is over 5 hours long.
  • BAHAHAHAHAHAHH...your pedi is an idiot.  Jonah has been pretty much only getting up 1-2 times since he was born with the exception of growth spurts.  As he's gotten fatter and older it has stayed the same.  I'm more than sure he's pushing 15 lbs now and he still wakes up ravished to eat in teh middle of the night.
  • Jude was sttn 2 months before reaching 12 lbs.

I should expand, he was sleeping from 9 pm-7 am by 10 lbs. He was giving us 6 hour shifts as soon as we stopped waking him for feedings at 2 weeks when he was 6 lbs.

  • I have to pull out the ::everybabyisdifferent:: dust here.

K is close to 18lbs (yes, he's a tank).  Some weeks he'll STTN.  Others he'll wake up at least once.  I don't think his weight has anything to do with it.

  • DS is 17 pounds, and gets up at least once still. My pedi had told me that too a couple of months ago. So not true in my case. Unless he was referring to the technical definition of STTN, which I think is 5 or 6 hours.

Ha!  DS is 14 weeks and 14 lbs and he is nowhere near STTN.  I am breastfeeding so I don't know if that makes a difference.

  • DS is 15 lbs and 4 months old and still gets up at least twice a night to nurse. He hasn't ever STTN, although he has on occasion only gotten up once.
  • Yeah that is what I was thinking... and oops wasn't the ped. was actually the NP (we switch back and forth each visit)

    Anyways no complaints here :D

  • DS weighs 16 lbs and wakes up every 3 hours to eat.
  • DS started STTN at 6 weeks, I think he was maybe around 9 1/2 - 10 lbs, but the more weight he has gained the longer he sleeps, he started out with 6 hours a night and he is now up to 8-9 hours a night.  He is probably close to 12 lbs now.

  • Every baby is different, look at how many different answers you got.  I think that they will STTN when they want to be honest.  I don't think it has anything to do with weight.

  • LMAO! I'm still waiting for this STTN thing to happen - I'm starting to think it's all a big lie to make us mama's whose LO's aren't doing it feel horrible! DS was 11lb13oz around 3mo - haven't had him weighed again yet...but he's no where near STTN!

  • DD has been STTN for a long time and she still isn't 12lbs.

In the beginning 3-4weeks she would sleep 11-5,6ish and then go back down until 8-9 (when I was on mat leave) now she goes down 9:30-10ish and I wake her around 7:30 for daycare, occasionally she will wake at 4,5ish for a quick snack and then go right back down

  • Our son is 10 weeks old, weighed 13.5 lbs. at 8 week appointment, goes down to bed around 8 pm, wakes up for a feed still some time between 1 am and 4 am and then is up again for the day some time between 5 am and 7 am (depending on when he woke up to eat overnight),

So technically he is STTN, but in my book, if we're still waking up, it ain't STTN.

  • My kid is 14lbs and is up every 2-3 hours usually

  • I don't think weight has a thing to do with it - kiddo is getting close to 17 pounds and still nurses 2-3 times a night (even though he doesn't full wake for that).
  • DS is 15 and definitely does not STTN.
  • DD is 8 weeks and I'm guessing around 10lbs, her 2 month appt is on Tuesday, and she has been sleeping through the night for about 3 weeks now. She sleeps from about 11pm-5am eats and then back to sleep until 8ish.
