2nd Trimester

Pregnant Women Need to Work, too!!

Ugh, I'm all tangled up in a knot. I got a call from an employment agency I've been working with (I've been unemployed since mid-February; got my BFP on Jan 31st), saying that the place I interviewed at a couple of weeks ago (my ONLY interview thus far, thanks economy!) wanted to see if I was still available for hire.

I called her back and said sure, I could start next week but because I've been unemployed I scheduled some appointments to take care of some stuff next week. This ended up working out really well because they only wanted me to work half days, 1-5 PM, next week because they were really busy. Fine. Just had to make a couple of adjustments (I have 4 appointments on 3 days -- I tried to call and change them/condense them, but everyone was booked up for the next couple of weeks).  So I also told the agency lady that I was pregnant, looking for her advice on how to handle it.  She was like, this may change some things. I told her I was only looking for the standard amount of recovery time off of work (6-8 weeks) and then I'd be back because my husband and I cannot live on his paycheck alone.

It just irritates me. I'm a hard ass worker and I will kick this job's ass. I learn really fast and I know that I can do this job. It's not my ideal job, but it's fvcking employment which DH and I DESPERATELY need right now.

Can they really say, "Yes, we'll hire you!" until I say, "Okay, I'm pregnant, here is what I'm planning on doing, what do you think?"  and then they backtrack all over themselves? I know they're desperate for someone. I know they want a permanent employee. But the way I see it, I'll be there for about 5 months, that's plenty of time to learn my job and kick butt at it, and then help train a temp to cover me for the two months I'll be gone.

Ugh. Rant over, I guess. I'm just irritated. This is the only thing that's popped up for me, and I was all excited, and now it might get taken away. I just want to cry. DH and I can't live on his paycheck alone much longer. We're making due, but it isn't enough. I don't want to bring my baby into this atmosphere. I feel like a royal failure. *le sigh*

Oooohhmmmmmmm ....

  • I am in the exact same boat.  Once I disclose my pregnancy to the agencies, I never hear from them again.

  • Im very sorry & I know it sucks - I got laid off after my bfp as well. However, from a company's standpoint with everyone out of work they have a ton of people apply for a job opening typically & they do not want to deal with someone taking off right after they hire them. Unfortunately you are not covered my FMLA unless you have been there a year, so they're not required to give you any time off or hold your job.
  • Temp agency b*tch needs to keep her mouth shut and let the company that might ultimately hire you make their own decision (hopefully based on your inevitable kick-ass performance).

    GL!

And you are not a failure. You just got sh*t on a little bit.

    This.

Someone will get on board and make the right decision and hire you.  Prayers coming your way!

I understand the company's perspective. But I will be returning to work.

And I don't expect them to even hold my job. Even if it's just a temporary win-win. They want someone now, I'm available now. Gives them five more months to find someone else they want permanently, y'know?  It's just so frustrating. She agency lady told me one of the other girls disclosed she was pregnant in her interview and when the company called the agency to I guess give them the 'results' of the interview, they said that they really loved her, etc., but that she was pregnant so they didn't want to hire her.  It just sucks. I can understand, but it still sucks.

  • Yes Amen!

I'm in a similar situation, except unemployment won't have anything to do with me because I just moved out here at the beginning of the year and I have no 'local' work experience.  My bf works with a temp agency in the area but they turn their nose up at me as soon as they find out I'm pregnant!

It's total BS!  There are so many businesses that are going to be hiring high school kids who will only show up for a day or two of work and then disappear because its 'just not for them' and they KNOW that, but they can't stand to hire someone who will work their ass off for them as long as possible which would allow them to, if nothing else, at least find another DECENT person for the job!

    ARGGGGGGH.  I feel your pain.

I'm going to go find something to throw, I think.

Thanks, I appreciate the warm thoughts. =)

It sucks because its illegal not to hire someone because they are pregnant, but it happens all the time and its near impossible to prove.

My unemployment is going to run out a 39 weeks, and I am in sheer panic.  We had saved enough money for me to take 10-12 weeks off, but because I got laid off, we have had to dip into the saving.  I fear it will be gone before the baby gets here leaving us with nothing!

  • I completely understand how you feel. I lived in FL for a year, looked for a job the ENTIRE TIME, and found nothing. Now I am in a new city, pg, and I know I will get passed up for any job as soon as I walk in with my big ole' belly.
  • I know how you feel. I lost me job on Tuesday due to issues with my DD health (i needed time off when she gets sick & for medical appointments). This makes baby # 4, So i'm scrambling to find another job ASAP. With 4 kids, new house & a car breaking down, I need a job. I thought it would be easier with having a govt clearance, but no luck so far. I tried to file for unemployment but my DH makes to much according to the state. It funny but it not enough to pay the mortgage, bills, food & health insurance. I'm getting my last pay check next week so i'm hoping that I can find a job by the end of the month. I've been doing pampered chef on the side, more for fun. But now I'm trying to put it into full force & make what i can.

I don't kow understand why being PG makes a differance in how you perform you job. We work just as hard as regular women.. I feel your pain.

This is total discrimination!!!  I wouldn't even tell them that you are pregnant.  Legally they can't discriminate against you due to your pregnancy.  It drives me crazy when stuff like this happens!
