Is there another solution besides Clomid?

I used clomid to conceive baby #1 but it made me really sick.  I lost 20 lbs and don't want to go through that again.  I was thinking of trying acupuncture.  I'd rather stay away from drugs.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm not sure I can conceive without help since I've been trying for a year with no luck.

Re: Is there another solution besides Clomid?

  • Suggestions that don't involve drugs?  No.  We are a pretty drugged up lot over here.

I know there is a Nestie on SAIF who conceived through Eastern Medicine and accupuncture I think.  Can't remember her name right now though. Anyone care to help me out here??

I think it would depend on what your diagnosis is...

  • Honestly it depends. First off do you have a concrete diagnoses as per why you have IF?  If you don't who knows... perhaps acupuncture and other things will work.  I know for me I had a concrete problem (anovulation) and all the acupuncture in the world I believe wouldn't have "fixed" it.

I do know I've never met an OB willing to do anything besides Clomid.  There are better drugs like Femara but you will likely need to go to an RE for that and if you have not done testing they will want to test you.  Considering your reaction I would do that.  In the mean time if you are not in a hurry I say have fun trying alternatives.  Just b/c they didn't work for me doesn't mean it is hopeless fo ryou.

  • I am sure there are other solutions besides clomid, but most of them involve of drug of some sort.  Different drugs have different side effects and maybe there is one out there that is more gentle on your body.

Like pp said, what is your diagnosis?  You could always try acupuncture, but just don't get your expectations too high.  You never know what can happen?

I have heard green tea, pineapple core, pomegranates, etc have beneficial effects, however, i am a big fan of the drugs.  They seem to get the job done faster and more efficacious.

  • Just out of curiosity--did Clomid actually make you vomit? ?Is that a common side effect?

  • I'm not sure of your dx, but I will say that I had a much better response on femara than I did on clomid. ?It didn't work because of our MFI issues, but I responded very well to it and had few side effects. ?But I'm sure that you would need to see an RE for that, as they like to monitor you very closely on it. ??

  • I will just say that if you decide to go an herbal route, know that herbs, while natural aren't always safe (or regulated) and you can really mess things up if you're not seeing a trained herbalist who knows your diagnisis specifically. I see a lot of well meaning ladies trying to take matters into their own hands who end up setting themselves back several cycles while the herbs exit their systems.

  • yes, I did vomit.  I don't think its very common most people have mood swings but i was violently ill on it.  Luckily it only took 2 months to work.  I don't think i would have made it more than that.
  • my diagnosis is unknown.  With my first pregnancy they said I didn't ovulate regulary.  I haven't been tested this time around but figure its the same thing.  I didn't know if there was another way to cause ovulation, maybe herbal or acupuncture.
