Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you give DC a snack whenever they ask for one?

For the past few days, DD has been going over to the pantry, pointing at the door and signing "eat." Both yesterday and today, she's done it when it was only a little over an hour since she ate breakfast. I tried to redirect her, but she kept crying and going back to the pantry. I do eventually give her a snack (she only snacks on healthy stuff so it's not that big a deal) and she gobbles it down, so I assume she really IS hungry. She repeats this routine again around 5 even though she has another snack around 3:30 p.m. I assume that at this age they don't just eat if they're not hungry, right? I should go ahead and give her food if she's asking for it?

This might seem like a really dumb question, but toddler eating habits are just so mind-boggling!

  • I'm in the Abq area too!  I never see people from around here on here!

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

  • I'd just give her a healthy snack when she asks for one.  Toddlers are big on grazing.  DD usually eats every couple of hours or so... With the amount of running around she does and the relatively small size of her little belly she needs a lot of refueling, I guess.
  • Yes I do esp if she has eaten her dinner or lunch.. She gets fruit w/every meal to ONLY if she eats a good amount of her main course, because the girl could live on fruit.. So have to have some restrictions.  But ya she will usually point to a fruit so i don't care she isn't pointing to a HO HO or anything.
  • Yup, they eat pretty often throughout the day and any time they ask for food, they get something. It might just be a few bites of fruit, but they do get something healthy to snack on. They don't eat big meals, and never have, so snacks are the only way to keep them gaining weight at all.

They tend to eat breakfast at 6:30, milk at 9, snack at 11'ish, lunch at noon, snack at 2'ish, milk at 3, often another nibble around 4, dinner at 5, milk at 6:30 (bedtime).

  • Usually, yes.
My son has a couple snacks a day. He usually wants a snack (or appetizer if you will), right as I?m cooking dinner. He smells the food cooking, and wants to eat instantly.
So, I give him a couple pieces of a cheese stick, diced up fruit or veggies, or some Goldfish crackers to tame his appetite.

  • I think toddlers are good at knowing when and how much they need to eat.  I feed DS whenever he's looking for food.  Pedi said that he should be eating 3 meals and 2 snacks a day.
  • Yes!  DD is on the small side, so she gets to eat whenever she wants.  She also knows when she's full.  She turned down DQ last night because she'd had so much at dinner.
