Babies: 9 - 12 Months

late rollers or crawlers, come in.

I'm feeling pretty down about my DD's lack of mobility today.

She is 7 months old and just over memorial weekend learned how to roll belly-to-back (but only one way, she can't roll the other way, if that makes sense), but still hasn't rolled back-to-belly yet. She is most certainly not doing any downward dog "yoga" poses (doesn't push up onto her hands to lift her chest off the ground and definitely doesn't push up onto her toes to be on all fours, or even on her knees). She wants to roll over back-to-belly and tries very hard by arching, but just hasn't done it yet.

A friend of mine's DD was born one day after my DD and I just saw a video of her crawling and making forward progress, and rolling all over the place. My DD still can't be left alone to sit unassisted. I mean she can do it, but I have to sit there and hold a hand nearby because she will topple over eventually if she leans to far to one side.

I keep telling myself she's just a late bloomer, but I'm all depressed about it now after seeing that video of my friends daughter. So, anyone else out there have a late bloomer when it came to rolling or crawling? Should I be concerned yet?

  • DS didn't start rolling over until he was almost 8 months old and even then he would only do it rarely, he also started scooting on his butt around that time. He will be 11 months old on 6/8 and just started to really crawl and pull himself up and now I can't keep up with him.  I wouldn't be too concerned yet. It will happen.

  • I wouldn't stress about. DS was not mobile at ALL until recently. He had rolled a couple of times but was not consistent at all. Then 2 weeks ago he randomly started crawling, getting to a sitting position independently, and pulling to a standing position all at once! And he rolls now too - so he could do it all along, he was just too lazy or didn't see the purpose until he realized he could move if he rolled...
  • DJ didnt crawl until nearly 11 months.  you should only be concerned if your pedi thinks there are global delays. :)
  • DD was not interested in rolling and didn't really do it consistently until around 7.5 months.  But she started scooting backwards around the same time and actually crawled forward around 8 or 8.5 months
  • My LO still isn't crawling yet. He gets close and then he'll give up. Have you talked to your pedi about this? If they are not concerned I'm sure its fine.  All babies do things at diff times and learn at their own pace. I'm sure your Lo will do it soon.

  • I swear I am saying this with the nicest intentions- CHILL. ?Your LO is NOT behind.?Crawling have never been a milestone and rolling is no longer one (due to the back is best campaign), so there is nothing to worry about. ?

Lily didn't roll from belly to back till 7 months and then didn't roll from back to belly until 8 month (she hated being on her belly- so why would she want to?) ?

After that she started rolling like crazy. ? About 10 months she started pushing up on her knees and can now push from her belly into sit. ? She is rocking on her knees, so I expect she will crawl soon, but I am not holding my breath. ?

"She will do it when she is ready." ?This is a mantra that I find very useful when I find that silly anxiousness taking over.?

Edit- Also, Lily has amazing fine motor skills and while most babes work on the gross motor skills first and then move onto the fine ones, some kids do it in reverse. ??

  • My kid rolls all over the place, but that is recent. I definitely feel the same as you, I saw a video on Facebook of a friend's 6 month old not quite crawling, but doing the worm and it made me sad that DS isn't doing that and he is 8 months old.

I try not to think about it, but it is so hard! I'm hoping he will catch on now that there is a 9 month old crawler in DS's class.

  • DS isn't close to crawling either. And, I'm really REALLY ok with that. I'm not ready for a mobile baby yet :) So be greatful for that!!
  • DD didn't start crawling until a week ago! but now she's super fast!! it's nuts.. i wouldn't worry if i were you :)
  • I wouldn't worry.  DD was a very late roller but an early crawler and looks to be on track for being right on time for standing/cruising/walking.  I really don't know of any baby that's exactly on time for all milestones... they're all averages, and each baby gets interested in different things at different times.  I'm sure if I sat down with you with a milestones chart, there are some areas where your baby's early, and that's just where your baby chooses to focus right now.  Once mobility is more important to her, she'll focus on that.  The only reason to worry is if there's a significant global delay in one or more entire areas of development, which your pedi would bring up.  Individual milestones are needless worries, even if they seem like the "big ones".
  • Thanks for the feedback and pep talk ladies. Most of the time I suceed in ignoring the thoughts that creep in about why isn't my baby doing X, or why isn't she doing Y. I dunno, today I just let it get to me. Pedi isn't concerned, and I think she's thriving, so I will try not to worry about it for now. She's just taking her time.

  • OMG - your DD sounds just like mine (she's only rolled back to belly, never belly to back, and she only seems to do it in her crib.) And I also have a friend whose DD is a day apart from mine and she's already crawling! Easier said than done, but try not to let it get to you. Like a PP said, I'm perfectly fine that she's not mobile yet - no need to babyproof. Wink And if the pedi isn't worried, neither am I.

  • 7 months is not late for crawling.....it would be considered early. Average is 9-10 months.  My son isn't any where near crawling due to his ability to roll to his destination.  ALL babies develop differently, don't worry.
  • DS only started rolling at around 6 months and still rarely does it...and he definitely doesn't do it to be mobile.  He's nowhere near getting up on all 4's and we don't really see crawling in the near future.

He is really good with his hands though and had his pincher grip down by 7 months.  He gets almost all his puffs in his mouth with no problem and loves to pinch pinch pinch mama!

As long as she's doing well in general it's okay!!! my babysitter's daughter didn't start crawling until she was 11 months!
