Anyone gate check a Bugaboo?

Longshot question...

but I'm flying solo next week and will need my "good" stroller once I arrive at my destination so I don't want to bring my umbrella stroller.  I was thinking about gate checking the Bugaboo (I'll need it in the airport to get DS around) but was concerned since it folds into 2 pieces.  Could I bungeecord them together?  Maybe put a bag over the pieces?  I don't really want to spring $160 for the transport bag for one trip.

 Any insight on this?  Thanks!

  • Can you check craigs list or something like that?  I have never checked my bugaboo (we usually take an umbrella stroller) but I've had two friends check their strollers and they've been broken.  While the airline does pay to have the strollers fixed, you'll be SOL while you are on your trip.

  • I have! I just separated them and they "checked" both pieces for me. No damage, issues, or anything. I was concerned as well and didn't want to pay for the transport bag since I only fly a few times a year. I didn't think about the bungeecord thing...that may work too if you're worried about somehow losing a piece or something.
  • We did. We did exactly as you're thinking - used a bungee to hold the pieces together.

We have the bugaboo transport thing (not sure of the name but it's a wheelie thing that fits the cameleon - probably the frog too - and folds down to be relatively small)...anyway, we've used that.  I'm a bit scarred b/c we travel a lot (family everywhere, lots of international vacations) and we haven't had any issues with gate checking but my BIL/SIL have.  Their bugaboo has been destroyed on 2 different trips now.  The pain of it was the most recent one was a 2 week long European trip and it got damaged on the way over.  So, even though they ended up getting a check for the damages, they were stuck with a bum stroller for an infant (they have 3) while on vacation.  Pain.  Given that, I would either bring a basic umbrella (we have an umbrella for traveling / car) or use a transport bag for the bugaboo.

  • Some airlines (admittedly I'm looking at transatlantic carriers) will only gate check a stroller that folds down in one piece. It'd be worth checking that with your airline to make sure it's even possible. That said, I'd use an umbrella, for all the reasons PP have said.

  • We gate checked seperately and had no issues (didn't bundle together). Didn't even think it check and see if they took it since at the time it was our only stroller. Should be fine since it does collapse
