I was a nanny in college, and before I started working for the nanny, I had never heard of a glider.
I fell so in love with it.
I know people can get by fine without them, but that little boy did NOT like to nap or go to sleep at night, and I don't think there's any way I could have gone without the glider. It was amazing.

With my first, I couldn't get a glider (was living overseas) so I just used a rocking chair someone gave me. It worked out fine and I'll probably use it again this time around. There are so many other things I'd rather spend my money on and I know a glider would just be for this baby and would never be used in any other room in our house.
If you are planning on more than one child or will reuse the glider, it seems fine to get one. Otherwise, the rocker will be fine. I bought a nursing stool, which I liked. My rocker had a padded bottom and I just laid the baby comforter over the back and that was very comfy for me. We used our rocker for a long time -- read books to DS before bed until he was 3 in that chair.
I was too cheap to buy one with my first pregnancy and accepted a rocking chair from my mother in law. I wished I had had a glider! This time I may buy a glider for upstairs and downstairs! I missed the glider from the hospital, mostly because it was the easiest chair to get down/up from. I had a c-section with my 1st and most likely will have another c-section. We bought a new toilet this week - handicap height - for the master bath too! Those are the 2 must haves in my opinion.
I actually got this from KMart when they weer having their baby sale. It was only $90 for the full set and I love it!! I got it in a natural wood collection with green cushions.
If you can't get a glider, I would at least get a really comfy cushion for your rocking chairs!
"For a long time there were only your footprints & laughter in our dreams & even from such small things, we knew we could not wait to love you forever."
I prefer the traditional rocker. I have one from my mother that was made by the local mennonites and it is beautiful. My mom will be sewing a new set of cushions for the seat and the back that will match the baby's room decor too. It's gonna be great.
