Babies: 9 - 12 Months

sometimes, I hate people....

this is my friend's status right now on facebook regarding her 5 week old:

Friend is dying inside letting baby cry in his crib; but he has a clean diaper and has been fed and is just fine, he just needs to learn to self soothe.

her other friends have "liked" it and then there's this comment:

It may take a few times but otherwise you will become a slave to his commands....

It makes me so sad. So very, very sad.

  • posts like these make me want to slap someone.
The fact that they're publicly announcing this is wrong. How hard is it to not say anything about survival and reminding her that HER BABY IS 5 WEEKS OLD???

  • That breaks my heart. I would have said something to her but that's because I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut. Poor, poor baby.
  • Send her a message with info on why this isn't okay. Unfortunately some people just don't do the research when they get pregnant and rely on outdated advice from others. I would give her a heads up that this isn't recommended and her baby is too young to self soothe. Maybe even recommend a book or video.
  • oh, I did respond:

I highly recommend Happiest Baby on The Block. Research actuallly shows that babies are not capable of self soothing until at LEAST 4 months old, and most not until closer to 6. He needs something, even if it's just to be held.

there is no way I could have kept my mouth shut about that.

  • dude say something like "get off your lazy ass_ and hold your itty bitty infant"
  • Idiot. I'm glad you said something. That breaks my heart. The poor little thing. I'll go hold him if she won't.

  • If it were me, I'd tell her that 5 weeks is too young to CIO. It is only recommended for older babies! I cannot stand that some people are so "inconvenienced" by their babies. I'm sorry, but I have two kids, and I managed not to have them CIO at that age.  I don't even like CIO. Ferber, yes, but not until they are older.

  • Heartwrenching.
  • It just makes me so sad. I never understand why they have babies if they don't wan tto hold them. DD cried like that when she was born I wore her and held her nonstop every time I laid her down she cried. Well it was because acid was coming up her throat. Maybe this LO could have silent reflux? Encourage her to talk to the pedi. Even if the baby doesn't have it maybe it will get the pedi talking to her about acceptable age for CIO.
  • at 5wks old he doesn't know how to soothe yet. He is still trying to bond with you. "sometimes people are morons" is what a comment should back to her.

I was thinking the same thing. I may need to send her Hippy's CIO article as well.

I think the "you'll be his slave comment bothered me just as much as her ignoring her crying baby.
