Clearly we have time for her to get used to solids - and according to the baby led weaning approach, I know she's simply not ready.
[Just for fun, we've tried a little bit of avocado and a little bit of bananas on different days last week. I even mixed a little breast milk in it. She was having none of it! Made the funniest faces. Not pleased at all.]
Do you think "magically" next week she will like it? Is part of introducing solids getting them to slowly like eating in a different way? Or do you wait (past 6 months if that's what it takes) for when she is ready on her own terms?
Obviously I will discuss this with her pedi at her 6 month appt, just wanted to hear your experiences if LO wasn't interested in solids at 6 months.
Thanks!
Re: Did your baby like solids from the get-go?
First of all, just because they make funny faces, doesn't mean they dislike a food. What happens when you offer more? Does she take it or turn away?
Baby Iris didn't take to solids right away. A mesh feeder worked really well for us--it got her used to the taste of solids first. Then she could get used to the texture after that.
But remember that breast milk/formula should be the primary source of nutrition in the first year anyway. So if she takes a little while to accept solids, it's ok.
DD did not like solids at all from the get-go. She took to her baby rice cereal pretty quickly, and after about a month of offering it to her 1x a day she finally started at least opening her mouth. We started this at 6 months. She was about 8 months before she would really open her mouth for the food, unless it was rice cereal, I couldn't seem to shovel it in fast enough!! Around 9 months she started being a bit better, would take at least 10 bites. At 10 months we started offering chunkier foods, banana, avocado, etc. She hated all of it! So far the only thing dd will eat with no issue and seems to really like is puffs, cheerios, pasta (I buy teeny little elbow macaroni and cook it myself, she HATES the gerber pasta), chunks or shreds of cheese and sometimes pears. Thats about it
She is still getting 24-30 oz of formula (we are starting this week to mix it with whole milk). As pp said, breast milk or formula is still their primary nutrition source until 1 year of age, but our pedi told us it's a really good idea to get them started at least trying solids way before that because they will totally resist the idea if you wait until they are 12 months old and at that point, milk should not be their primary source of nutrition.
DS hated rice cereal, hated any kind of puree, so for about 2-3 months, I was at a loss on what to offer him. He took to puffs, crackers and biscuits, so only dry crunchies were ok for him. Then I tried shredded chicken at 8 months, and voila! He loves chunky food: shredded steak, chicken, turkey, and recently started liking blueberries (oh the poop!) and bananas. No veggies that he's crazy about yet, but this is an improvement!
Hang in there! Like everybody said, it does get better.?
