Has anyone given birth at Unity or Mercy?

Has anyone given birth at Unity or Mercy?  I need to decide between the two and I keep hearing conflicting opinions.  Please tell me your experience.

Thanks!

Re: Has anyone given birth at Unity or Mercy?

  • If you mean in MN...I gave birth at Unity.  I had a good experience.  With my OB, I chould choose between Unity or Mercy...I basically picked Unity for 3 reasons:
    1. I was born there
    2. My mom and DH's aunt both work there
    3. My OB (or his nurse, can't recall which now) sort of implied that Unity is more "friendly" whereas Mercy is more "clinical"...I have zero idea if that is actually true or not.

  • I gave birth at Mercy, and it wasn't that great of an experience. I have a friend who had her baby there and they had a fine experience.

My water broke on a Thursday night, I went in and they told me it was just discharge from having my membranes stripped, so I should go home since I wasn't having contractions and there wasn't a doctor there to induce me (what!?!). I was being induced Saturday anyway.

Friday, my back was really sore (which I later realized was back labor), and a few times when I stood up there were some gushes. I called the hospital and they looked at my chart and told me not to come in because it must be more discharge since I wasn't having obvious contractions.

I got there Saturday morning, and when they went to induce me, the nurse said, "When did your water break?" I told her what happened and she goes, "That's not good." Because I had gone so long with my water broken, they did lots of blood tests on DS. The day after we went home, we got a phone call saying we had to come back right away because there was bacterial growth in a blood culture they had taken and it could be very serious. So, we get there and they had forgotten to mention that we would be spending the night there. It turned out to be nothing, and that whoever took his blood must have scraped the needle against his skin and that was why there was bacteria. We weren't so impressed with the whole experience.

  • I had my DD at Mercy and I was happy with the experience. I was there for 4 days due to a c-section. And most of the nurses were lactation specialists so they were a great help. I will be having my second child there as well.

  • I had DD #1 at Unity and will have DD #2 there as well.  The nurses were great...no complaints about the whole experience!
