Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When you start giving LO table food

What do you give them?  I make all DD's food so I use www.wholesomebabyfood.com, but at some point, maybe in the next few months, veggie and fruit purees won't be enough. So I was skimming the recipes and they have fancy recipes like homemade chicken asparagus risotto casseroles and all this other stuff that we never make. WTF. Ok, maybe DH and I will have some grilled chicken with rice and asparagus, but do you have to make extra fancy stuff for baby, or can they eat what you eat (within reason, obviously)? I know it's still early, but I was just thinking about it....

Re: When you start giving LO table food

  • Ooooh, good question.  I'd like to know also!!

  • DS eats plainer versions of what we eat for the most part, with some just-for-baby additions.

Bfast - cereal (oatmeal, barley, etc.) and some dry cheerios, sliced banana OR toaster waffle w/ cream cheese. Lunch - turkey or chicken with diced veggies (steamed) and fruit, cheese cubes. Dinner - mashed potatoes mixed with ground beef (cooked with onion, salt, pepper), garbanzos or lima beans, fruit mixed with yogurt... he gets a huge variety! That was just one sample day. ;)

  • After LO has a handly on Solids, meaning does well with puffs cherrios that kind of thing.  We now give her pancakes, waffles, french toast, grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, all differnt kinds of pasta, tofu(she didn't like), and fresh fruit
  • My son just eats what we're having in little pieces.  He likes it and has no problems with it.
  • Basically yes she eats what we eat. In fact, once she had a few bites of "big people" food, she stopped eating purees. Of course you'd still have to follow food restriction guidelines, but other than that you should be ok!
  • Good to know! Can they have seasonings and spices?  Pedi says she can have anything (except eggs & honey) once she is able to chew well and won't choke. But for some reason, I wonder if marinated meats or seasoned veggies would be too much for her to handle before a year or so. What do I know though...
    What about cottage cheese?
  • I never made anything special or fancy for DD, she just ate the same thing as us for the most part. I just made sure whatever food I gave her didn't have too much seasoning on it
