Adoption

Anyone already have a nursery partially or totally decorated?

I was wondering after the post about the nursery decor board how many of you have started nurseries early on?

I started my nursery about a year and a half ago right before we started with injectibles.  All the paint is up, we finished the chair rail a few months ago and I finally finished touching up.  I just ordered fabric for the curtains and the cribskirt (for the crib we don't have).  It's kind of depressing to have so much stuff done, but when we sign with the attorney probably at the end of the summer, I suppose I will feel better about it.  We don't even call it the nursery or the baby room anymore, we call it the bubble room, since that is what I painted on the walls above the chair rail.

If you have decorated before baby came or was known about, how much did you do?

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Re: Anyone already have a nursery partially or totally decorated?

  • Ours is complete.  I wouldn't call it "finished" as we plan on personalizing it once we receive our child but the paint is done, the crib is up, the glider is in place, etc.  We started putting it up at the end of November when we received match #1 and its been up ever since.  After failed match #2 I did take down or hide what I could b/c it was too hard.  Now I have a much easier time calling it the nursery since hopefully we will have a baby in there by next month!

  • We haven't, but we never planned to do much. We have a sitting room off of the master bedroom, and we always envisioned that as a good nursery for the first year. We know what furniture we want to put in there, and where, but it has other purposes right now. When we get closer I'll likely touch up the paint and maybe put some things on the wall.
  • We go back and forth about how much we want to do with our nursery before placement. For now, we have the furniture (crib, dresser, bookshelf w/hutch) in place and the walls are primed. Bedding, paint colors, window treatments, etc are on hold for now.?
  • We had a failed adoption match back in January, but that baby (gender unknown) was due June 6.  I had DH put down wood floors, we painted the nursery yellow and green and have all the furniture set up.  It is not decorated, but once we have a baby home we will either add blue for a boy or pink and purple for a girl.

If someone handed us a baby today all we would really need is a mattress and bedding.  I have 10 cases of newborn diapers, tons of clothes and bottles.  DH even bought me the travel system (stroller and car seat) for Christmas when we thought we were getting a baby in June.

    *sigh*Sad

  • Ours is completely finished.  Paint, furniture, crib with sheets and a crib skirt, things on the walls.  Partly it is all done because we had a failed match in january, partly because the house is on the market and it looks better this way then as an unfinished vacant room.  Our colors are all gender neutral (polka dots) so we really just need a baby to pop in there.

It doesn't bother me much, and I actually go in there to read because the chair is so comfortable!  Sometimes I get sad but mostly because we might sell before we get matched and the baby will never actually be in that room.

  • Our isn't decorated, we're waiting to find out gender, but we've definitely got all of the basics plus some.  We had a failed match in February.

    So far we have:
Crib, dresser, changer (small dresser), glider, ottoman, bath tub, mattress, changer pad, tons of diapers and wipes, diaper bag, bottles, nipples, bottle bags, pacis, infant carseat, stroller, and pack n' play, boy bedding (girl bedding picked out but not purchased -- the original set I bought was very small/irregular and had to be sold on eBay!)

    We need to:
Paint, finish closet organizer, decorate, buy toys/swing/entertainer/gym mat/boppy/sheets/changing pad covers/clothes

We're pretty happy with where we're at.

  • Our nursery was an office up until 2 weeks b/f out little one came home.   Putting the nursery together during that time kept us busy and sane during the stressful time!  The only thing that I had purchased ahead was the crib set that I had fallen in love w/ months before and could not pass up!
  • We did ours completely done except window treatments, we custom created a fabric covered cornice and fabric covered black-out shades but I wanted to wait on those for the gender. The cornice will be a green plaid and the shade is a heavy textured yellow with the green plaid matching trim. She also made a bedshirt to match the cornice fabric. I can't wait but here is some pictures from the room now:

I wish we could have co-slept even in the same room. Grant sleeps SO loudly that we don't even need the monitor anymore with him across the hall. There is no way I could sleep in the same room with him. Those two or three hours you get have to be product in order to function lol and my snoring, grunting baby is too much!

  • I am too scared to buy anything( Feel like I would jinx it, if you kwim?) I have the room all cleaned out and empty and ready to furnish when I find out what the gender is. (Most likely it will be a boy though).
  • I know that I have a different disposition about adoption in general than many and I do respect why ppl choose to not prepare a nursery - but I honestly cannot imagine how or when I would have had time to buy furniture or decorate with a baby.Granted, I tend to go all out when decorating.

Between being sleep deprived - filling bottles - changing diapers - and keeping up with general household tasks there would be no way I could deal with decorating. lol

  • We have ours partially done. The few times we were pregnant (before the m/c) we had bought our crib/changing table and some baby items like a swing and such.    Its not painted or decorated...but we have the basics.  Now that we are going to do foster to adopt, we are slowly buying games, books, etc so at least we will be prepared for when we receive a foster placement.

That's what our families are for! ;) lol

In all seriousness, both our agency and my parents (who adopted and went through one birth mom who changed her mind situation) suggested that we wait to go beyond necessities once we have our baby. We've chosen to take their advice based on their experiences.

Not to mention I procrastinate when it comes to decorating anyway. ;)?

  • Jacks!  Your nursery is absolutely adorable!  I love it!

  • We decorated (and shopped!) after our home study was done.  It was a great project while we waited.  I am so glad we did it then because it gave me hope and kept me going. I'm a serious nester, so I just needed little projects.  I spent a lot of time in the nursery reading, thinking and praying.

Logistics wise, I will say it was a big relief to have a lot of the decorating done.  I did over-buy and have a pile ready to go back to Babies R Us.  ;-)

  • We are just a few weeks away from homestudy completion, so I went ahead and bought some nursery decor - bedding set, lamp, valances, etc.  Mostly because I am having that room (along with several others) painted in a week and a half and I wanted the color I picked to match the stuff.

Other than those things, my only other "nursery" item is a set of really cute bunny bookends I got on clearance years ago at LL Bean, of all places.

After the homestudy is done, my DH wants to go ahead and order nursery furniture, but I'm hesitant.  I know I should and maybe once it's official, I'll be excited to.  Right now, though, I'm not quite ready.

2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!

  • We decided to start setting up our nursery after our homestudy was done.

Prior to that, we had only painted the room beige and I had painted an armoire white.  I had also worked on one painting.

Since then we have:  a crib, a dresser, a rug, a bookcase, some storage containers, some clothes, some decorations, and two more pieces of artwork that I made since then.

We do not have a chair, stroller, carseat, etc. yet.

I have found it fun to set things up.  Plus we are trying to spread out the cost over time.

  • Ooohh...what a fun topic.  I missed all of these topics when I was at work today.  We have everything we need already, since we have a toddler.  We will need to clean out the guest room that will become a nursery, paint, get new bedding, and that sort of thing.  DS' crib and dresser will move go to the new baby.  We will order a big boy bed (maybe bunk beds or something fun) for the big brother to be.  I might wait to paint until we know the gender.  DS' room is gender neutral b/c we didn't find out with him.  I would like the next nursery to be gender specific.  I have no idea when we will start this.  Our estimated wait is 18-24 months from homestudy approval, so we have a long time.

Jacks -- your nursery is ADORABLE.  I love cows, and that nursery is one of the cutest I've ever seen.

I appreciate that but people in my adoption support groups who successfully adopted as well as our agency told us to treat adoption the same as you would a pregnancy in that you would share the joy and decorate. And we did take that advice and now that I am a new mom with a newborn I can tell you that there is NO WAY I would have had time to decorate.

    Good luck!

  • we have started, slowly.. but we will get there, and we are only signing on with our agency next week!

Our theory is much like jack's. We would be decorating if we were expecting biologically. Plus, the way we see it, we know we WILL be parents. Even if it takes longer than expected, we are OK with that, and are having fun putting everything together. Also, for us, it is positive energy knowing that with almost 2 years into ttc, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  • our nursery is mostly set up, with room for personalizing once we get a placement.  Since we're fostering, we had to have the nursery set for our home study.
