Anyone ever use fondant?

I want to try using this for DS 1st b-day...for an under the sea theme.

Is it easy to use?

Can you eat it?

Where can I buy?

I don't know too much about it....just that it looks cool!

Thanks for any tips

  • Go to Michaels. I believe they sell it, and you can find some information on their website about how to use it. They make it seem really easy.

  • I think it can be kind of fickle, but I imagine that if you practiced ahead of time it might work?

You can eat it but it's NOT good.

No clue where you can buy it. :-)

    Good luck! You're very ambitious!

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • My friend used it.  She said it was really easy to use.  Just roll it out and cover the cake.  I guess it depends on what you plan on doing.  It doesn't taste as good as regular icing.

You can buy it at Michaels - they have tons of cake stuff there.

  • You can eat it, but I think most people don't like the taste. It takes practice to get used to working with it.

Is it easy to use? Depends on what you are trying to do with it. Cutting simple shapes is easy.

Can you eat it? Yes, but a lot of people don't care for the taste.

Where can I buy? Walmart, Hobby Lobby, some grocery stores

  • Another tip is to put buttercream icing under the fondant and peel it off before serving. Takes care of the bad taste factor.

  • Actually, I would not recommend going to Michael's.  They sell Wilton fondant which doesn't have a great taste.  Buy the brand Satin Ice online (or maybe you have a local cooking store that carries it or could order, we used to, but they recently closed, which sucks!), it tastes SO much better!!!  I haven't tasted the chocolate, but their chocolate fondant smells AMAZING!!!!  It smells just like chocolate.

This website https://www.globalsugarart.com/cat.php?cid=514 usually has it on sale at a reasonable price.

Yes, you can eat it, not everyone loves it (but this definitely tastes better!).

I have an easier time with fondant than icing a cake with buttercream and making it look good.

You can get all kinds of tips and instruction videos (youtube) online.

  • I got a recipe for marshmallow fondant, and it was super easy. PLUS it tastes good!

  • Also, Satin Ice comes in lots of different colors, but it's easy to buy white and color it yourself, you would probably end up wasting a LOT if you bought individual colors.  Of course, if you store it properly, it will keep for up to a year.

  • I'm a pastry chef and wedding cake designer. I work with fondant all the time and second marshmallow fondant! It's easy to make for home use and tastes very good.

I do like working with the Satin Ice too, but it can be so expensive to ship if you are only buying a small quantity!

I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you might have.  Feel free to PM me if you'd like to!
