What do you know about hormones in milk and meat?

I know that it is "bad" to eat the regular meat and milk because of the hormones and antibiotics but what exactly are the facts on what effects it has on humans?

Re: What do you know about hormones in milk and meat?

  • If you're willing to overlook some of the ridiculous ads and videos, PETA actually does have some very good info on this stuff. Despite my not agreeing with a lot of their methods of information distribution, I have gained a great deal of knowledge about animal products from them and their websites. I don't know any stats off-hand because that's not why I gave up meat or dairy, but I do know they have the info available.?

  • One reason why we purchase organic dairy and meats is b/c the "unorganic" animals  are treated w/ a growth hormone.  Well, when we consume them, we're taking some of that into our own bodies.  As time goes on (through generations, etc) girls are getting their period earlier, children are developing faster and at earlier ages puberty is hitting sooner, etc.  My main focus is for my children, so things like that really scare me.

Hopefully someone else here has more and better information than I do!  LOL!

  • I googled and the article I found did also state earlier puberty and also possible increased cancer risks.

    Ick!

And people wonder cancer is so out of control.....it's b/c of all the crap we put in our food!  Pesticides, hormones, fertilizers, etc.  Yuck yuck yuck.

  • I thought a good read on this is "Skinny B!tch" or one of the varieties (Skinny B!tch Bun in the Oven, etc.)  They definitely have an agenda (getting you to go vegan) but most of it seems to be backed up by facts.

  • **Butting in here**

I live and work on a dairy farm. I'm giving an honest unbiased opinion here.

First of all, there are no antibiotics in milk. It is illegal for milk containing antibiotics to leave the farm and be put in the food change. Our milk is tested daily to make sure that no antiobiotics are in the milk. If there is and it makes to the food chain there are thousands of dollars in fines the farmer has to pay. It's federal law so it applies across the board.

Same with antiobiotics in pork and beef. If an animal is treated with an antibiotic there is a 30, 60 or 90 day wait period before the animal can be slaughtered for human consumption. Also farmers are not drugging up animals with antibiotics on a regular basis. It's much like humans, when they get sick they get medicine. Only then though..it's not a daily occurrence. Those drugs are $$$ so we don't waste them and try to avoid using them if at all possible.

As for the hormones in milk and meat, most farmers are not using the products. We've never used BST on this farm and I know very few people who do use it. It's expensive and not worth the time or risks associated with it. As for the growth hormones, most farmers have proven that they don't work and a very slim minority (mainly on large feedlots) are still using them. In fact a good share of growth hormones are now outlawed for pork and beef....chickens are another matter but I know the law is changing there as well. Also a majority of creameries will no longer pay premiums or even take milk from farms that use BST.

As a result don't buy into labeling claims on milk that says "Antibiotic free." It all is...it's illegal otherwise.

Hope this helps. I just wanted to bring a new perspective/shed some light on the situation straight from the source.

My thoughts exactly.....I think your posts explained it perfectly!  Even though it hurts to pay twice as much for organic meat, milk, eggs, etc it is better than the alternative of disgusting chemically produced products.  While I appreciate the post regarding a farmers viewpoint I don't think the issue is being fully understood.  Even though there may be a wait period on slaughtering an animal that was given antibotics or hormones it does not mean that the animal is clear of these substances.  Hundreds of chemicals are being found in cord blood including DDT which was banned decades ago!  I choose to eat organic whenever possible for all these reasons!
