Infant coughing up blood?

My 6 month old was in her crib when I was taking the shower.  When I came out she was crying and coughing.  I went to get her and she spit up blood- it wasn't a ton but enough to stain her pjs and crib sheet.  After that, she seemed fine, nursed, and is now taking a nap.  I called the drs and have an appointment this afternoon.  They said they would usually have sent me to the ER but since she wasn't in distress, I could just take an appointment.  They did say, however, if it happens again then I need to take her to the ER.

 Any experiences?  I'm so nervous!

  • Is it possible you have a cracked nipple? My DD would sometimes spit up blood and it was because it came from me. Maybe try pumping to see if you get any blood coming out.
  • Does she seem to have any seasonal allergies right now? DD has "spit up blood" or coughed it up at times, but the blood isn't coming from her lungs, it's coming from the back of her nose/throat. Postnasal drip OR excessive dryness in the throat/back of nose can cause the membranes there to thin and they bleed easily. Maybe it's just that?

Could be.  She's had a basic cold for the past few days... hopefully that's it!
