1st Trimester

Does anyone have a A- blood type?

I just got my blood results from the other blood tests and they stated that I am A- which means I will have to get a injection at 28 weeks and right before gaving birth to create antibodies for the baby against infection or something like that.

Does anyone else have to do this?

I think that is b/c your husband must be something +, right? Isn't it when you have opposite signs that you have to get that shot?

  • I am A + but they haven't said anything about that.
  • If you are a negative blood type, you get a shot called Rhogam at 28 weeks and after you give birth (or if you have any bleeding during pregnancy). There isn't acutally a risk to this pregnancy, but the risk is to future pregnancies/babies. If this baby has a positive blood type, and any of its blood would mix with yours, your body would make antibodies against it. If you have another child with a positive blood type, those antibodies could attack that pregnancy.

  • I'm AB- and DH is O+. The shot is for negative blood type mothers who may have a positive blood type baby. Check out the RhoGAM website.

  • I am AB- and my DH is O + ... it's called RH factor... not really a big deal... just get the shot so that your baby has a healthy delivery.
  • Yep, it is the Rhogam shot. You have to have one if you are RH- and the father is Rh+.

I ended up w/ three shots w/ my son and I am not sure if I have to have more w/ this pregnancy.

  • Yes. I am. It is to protect the mother in case the baby has a positive blood type. Positive blood can attack the mother's negative blood after birth and cause issues. Not sure the full details.

  • I have A- and my mom has O-, she didn't have to get the shot since I have - blood, but since DS has +I had to get it... Which was in my arm, I hear some women don't get a choice between arm and hip.

  • If you are - .. and the your OH positive you have to have the Rhogam shot. Like others have stated it is the RH Factor. I had one after my miscarriage.. and I carry a card with me. This pregnancy i will have to have another shot after the baby is born.

At least they caught it early!! and now they know.. no big deal!! =)

Any one who has a negative blood type (A-, B-, O-) needs to get the shot as a precaution in case the baby has a positve blood type. Otherwise, if the bloods mix your body could treat the baby as a foreign body and try to attack it.

  • I'm AB- and my husband is O-.  I thought we (me) had to get the shot because we were BOTH negative?

So, am I understanding this now that no matter what, since I am a negative, I would need the shot regardless?  And doesn't it have something to do wth blue baby syndrom?  Not sure if that's what it is actually called, my mo just was saying something about it...

From what I understand, if you and your H are both negative, then the baby will be negative, so there is no danger or need for a shot. The danger comes if the baby is positive and the mother negative, and for that to happen the father would have to be positive. But, you know, I'm not a Dr, so I could be wrong about that.

ETA: Assuming H is the father of the baby. (After reading a pp, I thought I should add that.)

It's actually the other way around.  If baby's + blood gets into Mom's - blood, mom will start to  build antibodies against the + blood.  This is only a problem for the next pregnancy, there will be enough antibodies in mom's blood to attack baby, which can cause serious problems, including m/c.  Weird how the body works!
