Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your dc still take a bottle?

My dd is not going to give up her bottle by 12 months.  It is just flat out not going to happen, she's not ready, and I am not going to force her.  I introduced the sippy cup at 5 months, but have not been at all consistent until the last month, but she really doesn't like them.  She will drink out of a regular cup, but it of course goes everywhere!

So my question is, is your over 12 month old still drinking from the bottle instead of from a cup?

 Thanks!

  • Yep. As of right now, DS refuses to take milk out of his straw sippy - just water. I'm not freaking out about it - as long as he's weaned off the bottle by 15 months, we'll be okay. I haven't really gotten too strict about it yet, either.

  • LOL don't be ashamed! I would love to be done with the bottles but if they just won't give them up, what the heck are you to do, they have to eat!
  • DS is almost 16 months and still takes milk in bottles. (usually 2, sometimes 3) I really don't care. (He drinks water from his sippy cup.) Our pedi said it was really a matter of convenience for parents than anything else, and especially if they do not  have any eaar problems, there is no real rush yet. She said if I don't mind, it is not a big deal. She said by 18 months they should be down to one at night if possible. Don't worry!

eta: We weaned from BFing in March so taking this away was not on the top of my list. Probably some time this summer, I guess...

  • I am glad I am not the only one!  DS will take a sippy for like a sec and than just throws it down!   I lke your thinking as long as it is gone by 15 months!  I still have 3 months to work on it!

DS1 was off the bottle at one year.  I just am not as strict with DS2 since I SAH.  I don't know if that really makes a difference, but to me it does.

  • My DD takes both.  We plan on weaning her by 15 months.  One sippy you may want to try (it's DD's favorite- and we've tried them all) is the Gerber Nuk learner cup.  DD barely puts it down.  We just give her water in it and she loves it.  They have them at Wal-Mart.

  • Yes.  My daughter will drink water out of a straw cup, but milk is a whole other story.  We will work on it.  I'm not worried, she won't be drinking out of a bottle forever.  I would just be patient.  When they are ready, they are ready.

  • We gave it up as soon as he turned 14 months. Our pedi recommended it be gone by 15 months.

  • DS takes both - mainly 2-3 bottles a day (including his night time 5AM bottle). I've tried to be more strict but sometimes that's all he wants and it quiets him down. ::hangs head in lazy shame::

I was hoping he'd be off them by the time DD gets here, so I'm not so sure...

  • Thanks girls, sounds like I am  pretty much on the same page as you guys, to the person who posted the nuk learner cup, thank you! I will try that.  She does have the nuby one with the soft spout and will not use it, but maybe she'd tried the nuk.

I mean TRY the nuk, not tried.  LOL.

  • Our pedi said 15 months and be done with it.  However, my H and I have two vacations coming up in the next month and for ease for the grandparents, we will be cutting it off at 16 months when we're finished traveling.  She takes a nap and a bedtime bottle at this point.

  • No. I am very surprised that weaning went as well and as fast as it did. We've been bottle and formula free for 3wks now.
  • Yes, he still gets bottles. ?But he only started getting them at 10 months when I started to wean and he's only been on formula full-time since 11 months so I don't want to rush another transition. ?We're trying to switch to whole milk at the moment and when he's drinking that consistently we'll reduce the bottles. ?I'm not worried. ?All in good time! ?

He does cups for daytime but I still give him a bottle at night before bed.  I do not look forward to taking this away.
  • Yes he does.  I wasn't consistent either until the last couple of months.  He can drink out of a sippy but 1. he doesn't seem to want to (he'll take a couple of sips and that is it) and 2. he doesn't seem to get that he has to tilt his head back to make sure the liquid gets to the spout.  And he seems the most willing to drink from a sippy cup if he is allowed to just roam about with it.  Try giving it to him at a meal and he just wants to chew it, shake it, or drop it.

  • Yes - 2/day...one in the am & one before bed. Her afternoon mild she drinks out of a Nuby sippy - we had to differentiate between a water sippy (w/a straw) and milk sippy (regular sippy cup) b/c she also wouldn't take milk out of her straw sippy. I don't really care - I'll tackle it when she's home w/me this summer :)
  • DD is eighteen months old (almost 19...) and she still takes two bottles, one for nap and one for bedtime. She drinks out of a sippy cup just fine and is now drinking out of a normal cup (no lid or anything) for the past three days... I figure you pick your battles. I've got bigger fish to fry than worrying about taking her bottle away.

This.  DD absolutely refused to drink milk out of a cup, especially her morning bottle.  We didn't stress about it, since really, why take something away from them that they so clearly enjoy?  Anyhow, we started exclusively offering straw cups of milk around 18.5 months, and at that point she didn't complain -- so yes, we are finally completely done with bottles!

This is dd too.  She will suck on it trying to get the fluid out but can't seem to get the hang of putting her head back so the fluid hits the sippy part.  I decided she might be able to do a straw but she doesn't want anything to do with that either :)

  • We have yet to find a sippy cup that DS will take anything out of.  So far we've tried the Dr. Browns, Nuby, Nuk and Avent and he chews on the bottom and then throws it to the ground.  I'm planning on picking up a straw cup tomorrow to see if this works better.  I actually tried letting him drink from a cup with no cover, but he was freak out by the water coming out so fast.

  • Were trying to get rid of the bottle, but there are times that DS just won't drink out of a cup/sippy. So I give him a bottle. Usually only before bed and maybe in the morning. Depends on his mood.

  • We had a bottle at night until about a month ago. Then we cut that bad boy out, and man I do not miss it at all. Neither does DS.
  • no, we stopped about 2 weeks ago.  She was only getting one in the morning and when we went away for memorial weekend I didn't bring any with.  She did just fine without it.
  • No we stopped cold turkey at a year.  He only took bottles 3 days a week though.
