Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 month ?? about sippy cups???

DD has been using a sippy cup (with handles) since 5 months and she has the hang of it...but has only ever drank water out of it.  Now I am trying to change her afternoon bottle to put her milk in a sippy cup ( I have tried about 8 different ones) and she just wants to "sip" on it, not drink it.

So.... is this too early to start a sippy cup with milk?  should I hold her down and feed her like a bottle (even though she can feed herself her own bottle and does it daily)...  Should I wait and try again at 10 months?   Should I continue to try different cups or keep with the same cup?

 Thanks for all the advice...

Re: 9 month ?? about sippy cups???

  • I have no idea. DS only sips out of the sippy cup. He only drinks a little and then he just wants to chew on it. I have no idea how I am ever going to get him off of the bottle! I am just kind of hoping that in time (and once he finally gets some teeth) that he will realize he needs to drink out of the cup, not just chew on it!

  • I know exactly what you mean, DD chews on it too.  She is so addicted to the bottle and I am nervous about taking it away in 3 months....

I'd wait and try again in a month or two.  It's not really critical now.

This, though, from a mom whose kid doesn't really "get" the sippy cup much at all.

  • DD just doesn't get the sippy cup.  She only recently (like within the last 3 weeks) started feeding herself her bottle, and still won't if she's tired or something.  I was majorly stressing about getting her off the bottle by a year and onto a sippy cup, but that's just not going to happen, so I am going to stop putting on so much pressure to make the switch.  When she's ready, she'll do it.  I did notice that she will take sips out of a regular cup.  I just use my nuby sippy cup without the nipple part because the opening is small and let her drink that way when she is eating chunkier solids.  We've been going super slow on everything though, she's just now getting off of pureed foods and onto foods she has to chew, so I might not be the best advice giver :)
  • I forgot, I also wanted to say, I tried the whole feeding it to her like a bottle thing, that didn't work :)  She just got PO'd that  it didn't come out like it comes out of her bottle.  Sometimes I think kids that drank bottles have a harder time going to the sippy cup than breastfed kids, because the sippy just reminds them to much of the bottle, but different...if that makes sense lol.  I could be waaay off here :)
  • Thanks for the advice!  sounds like I need to quit being so hard on myself and her and just give her some more time.
