was it gradual/sudden? I wanted it to be gradual, but it ended up being sudden due to E.
any tips? I left the house the first day and had DH give her the bottle of formula. That way she was not smelling me and wanting me instead. E did very well. DH ended up giving her the first 2 bottles and that helped I think. She easily transitioned to formula and never wanted me again.
how did it go? It went really well. She was getting bottles or cups during the week while I was at work and was definitely starting to prefer those over bf, so it made the transition very easy.
was it gradual/sudden? I did it gradually. I cut out one feeding each week until I was done.
any tips? No tips. I know that for a lot of people going cold turkey seems to work well. I was hoping that doing it gradually would prevent engorgement, but I still got pretty engorged once I quit that last feeding.
How old? What does my ticker say- 20+ months? We're down to one a day
How did it go? Its going well- my dr wants me to wean because of some complications I may have with this pregnancy- but she hasn't asked too much for it. This last feeding may be just as difficult for me as for her...
Gradual- I've just let her lead the way, and then a few weeks ago we started cuddling, reading bedtime stories and added in a cup of milk to that routine- she quickly dropped the nighttime nursing. When she's asked during the day (before/after nap) I just distracted her. If she's really upset and asks, I'll let her, but my supply is way down so she's not very interested.
how did it go? surprisingly well (he never took a bottle and was a huge fan of the boob, so we were expecting the worst)
was it gradual/sudden? gradual - we dropped one session/week over 4-5 weeks; think it's always best to go gradual for both you and your LO whenever possible
any tips? If you currently BF as part of a bedtime or naptime routine, make sure that BF is not the last thing you do. It was always the last part of our routine, but about a month before starting the weaning process we moved the lullaby to the last part. DH also took over the nap/bedtime as applicable for the first few days of dropping that session.
Amelia was 12 months. We started mixing cow's milk with pumped breastmilk (in her bottles at daycare), 25/75 at first, then 50/50, then 75/25, and then all cow's milk! She did super well. No problems. During that time I nursed in the mornings and evenings, and pumped once during the day at the office for the mixing. I think we did it over about two weeks total.
Kirsten was just over 18 months when we stopped BF. It went pretty well. We had gradually reduced our feedings to three times daily at that point. I just gently phased out the remaining three feedings, as they were really for comfort at that point. So basically instead of our morning cuddle/nurse, we hopped out of bed and had breakfast right away. We skipped the naptime nurse in favor of a long cuddle with lots of reading. Our bedtime routine needed just a few tweaks to avoid our rocking chair and any bf associations.
Just go with what works for you and your LO. Also, if you're allergic to sulfa, it is not reccommended you use the cabbage technique to ease engorgement.
Ryan was 22 months. It took about a week. He's wasn't particularly ready, but he got a bad cold toward the end of my pregnancy and could keep the milk supply up, so he got really frustrated and I decided it was time.
L was 5.5 months. I had been back to work for about 4 weeks and pumping was hard for me with my teaching schedule. She was already on 2 bottles of formula a day. I was trying to just nurse in the am and pm. But, one night she was obviously starving and my supply was not there, so she got a bottle and we went cold turkey. I didn't have too many issues with engorgment so it was the right time for us both. GL!
We started to wean at 9 months and by her 10 month birthday she was on all formula. It was tough. My supply had dropped to just about nothing and she was so active during the day, she was cluster nursing from 3 to 7 am. She was impossible to feed outside of her room (too distracted) and I felt very tied to the house. Even though she wouldn't eat during the day I would still try.
It was tough because she had never consistently taken a bottle and she refused to drink formula. I got a terrible ear infection and had to take both antibiotics and pain killers and I knew at that point we were done. It wasn't until I stopped completely that she began to drink formula without a huge fight. During the process I was nursing in the morning and at night and giving bottles during the day and she figured out that she could skip the bottles and just wait for the nursing at night. It was a long, long, long three weeks but it was the right decision for us.
This is a little hard b/c I know a lot of people will have strong opinions on this...but I also want to share b/c it was the right thing for us and I am proud of us for all our hard work.
How old: 3 years
How did it go: Totally fine, way better than expected. Asked once in a while but it was easily avoided.
Gradual/Sudden: Well we had dropped down to just a couple times a day so it wasn't very frequent. Then once I decided to quit, I just quit. I talked to Fudgie one night and said that it was time to stop and that was our last time.
Tips: the books say to decrease the number of times in a day, don't sit in the spot you normally nurse (when you don't want to be bf'ing) etc. Don't put yourself in a position where DC will expect it at a time when you don't want to bf.

In cases where this is true you can use gratted potatoe instead.
