I was talking with a very pregnant woman at the pool today and she told me she had gotten her tubes tied after having her last baby and at her childs 1st birthday she found out she was pregnant again. She went on to tell me that since she found out she was pregnant that she had come across several other women who became pregnant after tying their tubes. Does anyone know what the odd's are of not becoming pregnant again after tying your tubes?
Re: Tied Tubes = a baby???
Occasionally a woman still gets pregnant, despite having had her tubes tied properly. The tubes have evolved in such a way as to try to heal themselves, and sometimes a tract develops that allows egg and sperm to meet. Tubal ligation, regardless of whether the tubes are cut, burned, clipped, banded, or tied, is about 99 percent effective, meaning that about 1 percent of women will conceive an unplanned pregnancy after tubal ligation. This failure occurs slightly more frequently in younger women.
Well, it's better than how most people take the pill (missing pills, not the exact same time every day, etc...). It's only 99% when taken perfectly. Unfortunately I am one of those people who suck at it!!
The answer is that it depends. Some types of tubal ligations have much higher failure rates than others. And, all types are more likely to fail after 10 years. I looked into this when I was having weird symptoms about a month ago and found failure rates up to 5%. Kind of alarming, really.
That said, I'm the most fertile person on the planet and my tubal ligation has yet to fail... even after 9+ years.
I knew someone who got pregnant after a vas. He wanted to divorce his wife because he didn't believe it could be his. Paternity test proved it was his
Yeah, nothing is 100% which is why a simple procedure vs. major surgery makes more sense to me, kwim?
after talking to a nurse in my OB's office (while crying about my paragard pregnancy), she assured me that in her 40 yrs of nursing, she has seen all sorts of pregnancies--tied tubes, IUD, pill, etc. etc.
the only complete 100% is a hysterectomy (nurse's words, not mine). or, you know, abstinence...
I don't know anyone personally that this happened to, but when my mom was pregnant with my youngest sibling, she was siting in the waiting room of the Ob's office talking to another pregnant woman. My mom was telling her that this was her 5th child and after this, she was getting her tubes tied. The woman said to my mom, "Be careful, I had my tubes tied too." as she looked at her engorged belly.
My sister just gave birth a week ago when my BIL had a vasectomy Thanksgiving 2007. So those aren't 100% either.
I have known 3 people to get pregnant after their tubes were tied and 2 (now 3 with BFW) that got pregnant off of their IUD.
Just so you all know, this freaks me the feck out. I will be getting an IUD and praying to the Dino Jeebus that it friggin works like it is supposed to!
