3rd Trimester

Anyone not had to pee in a cup?

I can't remember if the ONE time I did it was pre-pregnancy or at the very beginning of my pregnancy, but nonetheless, I haven't since.  Is this abnormal?  Not that I don't mind trying to not pee all over my hand or anything, it just seems that many of you mention it and I'm wondering why I wouldn't be.

Re: Anyone not had to pee in a cup?

  • hmm, I still have to at every appt.

  • Loading the player...
  • I have to do it at every single appointment.  They check it to see if there's sugar.  I'd be kind of concerned if they never checked it...

That is very strange.  Usually it happens at every prenatal appt
  • That's weird.  I have to pee in a cup at every check-up.  They check for glucose and protein.  I figured it was standard practice...

  • That is very odd to me.  I have to pee in a cup every time I walk into my ob's office -- pregnant or not.  And even if I'm just there for something quick and not my regular appointment.

  • I haven't had to since my first visit either.

Seems odd, but some doctors choose not to do any testing unless they see a reason to.

  • That's kind of odd.  How are they checking your protein levels?
  • I agree with previous posters...I've had to pee in a cup at every appointment.
  • I pee in a cup at EVERY Dr. visit! I wish I didn't have to, but my Dr. runs like 4 or 5 different tests on it to make sure that everything is ok. I think they check things like sugar, protein, etc...

Do they do blood work everytime you go? Maybe they check for all those things with blood rather than urine.

  • Huh? That does seem unusual. I assume your blood pressure is good then. I believe the regular urine tests just check for protein (a sign of pre-e). My BP has stayed really low, so it annoys me a bit that my office still makes me do it every time.

  • My midwives hadn't had me PIAC since my first bloodwork, done around 6 weeks pg.  I did have to start doing it again last week when being checked for pre-e, and even though I haven't been diagnosed yet, I think I will have to PIAC at my weekly appointments from here on out, just to do the dip for protein to see...but it isn't heavily analyzed at the lab -- they just dip a strip in to see "yes, protein" or "none"

i have to at every appt. they check for protein.
  • I do at every appt.
  • During this pregnancy I've had to give a urine sample at every appt.  But in my previous pregnancies, I never had to at all.  I think it just depends on the Dr.

  • It's the first thing I do at every appt.  They check for sugar in your urine.
  • OOHH...you need to ask your doc why you haven't had your urine checked at every visit.

UA (urinalysis) can not only detect sugar in the your urine, but protein (possible sign of pre-e), and nitrates (possible sign of UTI)....

  • I have to at every appt.  That's strange that you wouldn't have to.

  • Like most of the other posters, I have to pee in a cup at every appointment.
  • The only time I have had to is when they suspected a UTI other than that I haven't had to at any of my appts.
  • I do at every appt...to check for protein to make sure my kidneys are filtering and to rule out soft signs of ecclampsia

  • I had to at my first appt but not once since then...
  • I have to at every single appointment.  My OB said it's especially important towards the end of the pregnancy because they check sugar levels for signs of GD and protein levels for signs of pre-eclampsia.

  • I'm also in MN and haven't had to pee in a cup since the beginning.  Where do you go?  I'm at Health Partners center for women.... my blood pressure has been really good, though, maybe that's the reason?
  • Every appt! It's not easy anymore either....I pee all over the place.
  • I have to pee at EVERY appt...they test it for protein/glucose.  I think it's odd that you don't have to. Huh?

  • i'd be concerned if they didn't check me every appointment.  you might want to ask.
  • Every appt to check protein and sugars in the urine to know if they need to do more testing. It can help the doc catch pre-e as well as UTIs.

  • i have to every appt...even if its an emergency appt-every time its the first thing i have to do.
  • I haven't had to since 1st tri...my pregnancy has been normal & healthy.
  • When I was seeing an OB I had to every time.. at 20 weeks I switched to a midwife and have had 2 appointments w/ her since then - no peeing in a cup there.
  • Weird how the responses are either "yes, every time" or "never since the beginning"!  Thanks for responding; this is very interesting to see!

I have been told that I have a "textbook 'every woman wants this' pregnancy" by my doctor and nurses.  No complications, great blood pressure, have felt great, haven't had swelling (until my cankles this past Saturday= SUPER CUTE), gained very little weight myself while baby is growing at a healthy pace, etc-- so I'm wondering if that is why?  Maybe a 'do not test until we feel we might need to' deal?  Oh-- and no extra b/w for me either in the place of PIAC.  I'll have to ask at my appt next week.

Well, I suppose that if everything seems to be ok & you're feeling good, then I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe it just depends on the Dr.

  • I've only peed in a cup at my first app, too.  Midwives tend to be more hands off and only monitor when the situation warrants it.  They do check bp at every appt, and if that was unduly elevated, they'd investigate further.
  • I've had to at every appointment since my BFP.
  • I would be very concerned and inquiring as to why you are not having your urine checked.  Aside for checking for sugar, they look for protein in the urine, which is an early indictor of Pre-eclampsia.

  • I'm not sure why so many of you see this as such a red flag.  You can see from the responses that not every practitioner thinks they are necessary at every visit.

OP, if you are concerned, ask your doctor why they don't require them at every visit.  But I don't think you need to be concerned, at all.

  • I'm not concerned; just curious.  If I didn't trust my doctor, I wouldn't go to her. Yes
  • I pee every time at least now it's easy to pee on demand it used to be hard to have to pee
