I'm stuck.
I really want Max to have a lovey... we have a stuffed dog MIL gave him that's perfect; it's cozy and a good size and adorable and I can buy another 1 or 2 to keep on hand... I'm worried though, that he'll pick something else to be his main lovey! LOL
Did you just choose something and encourage it to the point that it became the main thing, or did DC just pick something on their own? I'm trying to decide if I should be handing him Blue Dog every time, or if he'll come up with his own toy!
(Am I overthinking this?)
Re: Loveys: Did you choose or did DC?
I also wanted Sabrina to have a lovey, but she just hasn't gotten attached to anything like that yet. I've introduced several things but nothing has held her interest that long. Both my brother and I had loveys but my mom said we didn't get attached to them to well after a year old so I'm assuming Sabrina will just pick something up one day and that will be it. Or she won't have one. Who knows.
We've just introduced a lovey.. She's definitely not attached to anything yet but likes to hold anything soft.. So we've got about 4 different loveys and whichever one is the cleanest or closest we give her.
I'm interested in reading everyone else's answers!
I don't think you can really force it...I really wanted N to have a lovey, I tried with a special blanket, and a little doll...but she didn't have much interest.
I had a blaket that I loved and carried through my toddler years...but N just doesn't have the same attachment to anything. Maybe that will change but at this point I'm not forcing anything on her....she's too stubborn as it is already she'd probably rebel and hate whatever I picked...and then she'd want a dog toy as a lovey or something like that.
This is my inclination to believe, but I look at Faith and her BunBun, and I'm not so sure... they decided that would be Faith's main lovey, and she is OBSESSED with that rabbit! But I don't know if it's a coincidence that it's her favorite, or if it's because he has been with her for every nap and bedtime since she was 6 months old!
I don't know, Sabrina has had this monkey in her crib for every nap and bedtime since before 6 months and all she does is shake it when she's avoiding going to sleep....
So I added a stuffed doll thing thinking maybe she'd like that, and now she just has two things to play with to avoid sleeping.
I would think that it probably has more to do with it being with her for every nap and bed time since she was so young...it probably at first was just routine to her and then became something she associated with naps/bed time and eventually became something she needed/wanted to go to sleep. So maybe it has more with the parents being super consistant with making sure that the kid always has the same lovey at the same time etc.
Gabe doesn't have one specific item - he chooses a different toy/item every few days. He started this at about 15 months. But he does sleep with a monkey and cabbage patch kid (not completely necessary but they keep him company.)
After much discouragement Grace has taking a liking to her brothers socks. Seems like she likes the stinky ones the best particularly the red and white lightning mcqueen ones right off of his feet. I try to push the stuffed penguin that Gabriel picked out for her but she's not too into it.
This is N, she has had the same lamb in her bed since pretty much day one...and honestly I don't even know if she knows it's there...she has never played with it.
She does have a little "my first doll" that she likes to shake and throw out of her crib.....and we take it on long car trips for her but she doesn't "love" it...it's much more of a take it of leave it attitude.
With both kids, I gave them something to sleep with and it became their loveys.
For Joshua, I crocheted a blanket long before he was born and I used to give him that when he went down for bed and also a pillow (101 dalmations, since his room was a fire house). He is still attached to his pillow.
For Jacklyn, Joshua picked a stuffed rabbit for her when she was born and I've had it in there with her since we brought her home. And that has become her lovey (we've got three).
Both Bella and Mariessa chose theirs. Bella still has this old Carter's blanket my sister gave her at my shower. When my MIL would watch her when I worked she would wrap her in it all the time, and to this day (6) she still takes it with her on car trips and at night.
Mariessa was about 13 months old or so when she took to my PJ top. It's a satin-ish pajama top with cherries on it and she calls it her "mimi" and drangs it around with her everywhere. She actually just likes anything with that smooth satin feel, I made her a little blanket with that minky stuff on one side and the satin stuff on the other and she'll drag that around too.
My other 2 kids didn't have loveys.

We were given several stuffed animals, loveys, blankies and so for awhile I had kept a stuffed elephant and a stuffed moose in each of their cribs. Sean took to the elephant for a month or so and then really latched on to his blankie. The same with Aiden---he really took to these blankies someone gave us from PBK. We went thru so many because they were dragging them all over. (I bought an extra set in a different color because they were being discontinued and wouldn't you know it---Aiden won't have ANYTHING to do with them.)
So long story short--they chose them. I keep offering different stuffed animals and blankies but it doesn't last long as a favorite.
BTW, I totally don't think you're overthinking it since I am currently trying to figure out how to get Aiden to take to a newer blankie or stuffed animal.
