So I started building my stash before I went back to work (when Eve was about 7.5 weeks old). My stash is not huge, I'd say around 100oz.. BUT, somehow miraculously I have not had to touch it in the 7 weeks I've been back to work. I've added to it a LITTLE.. but nothing too significant. I've basically just been pumping as much as I can and it always seems to be just enough for my work days..
So.. my LC recommends 3 months in the freezer.. Next week will be 3 months for the beginning of my stash.. So should I start thawing that and freezing what I pump now? It seems like such a pain.. And then if she doesn't take milk that I thaw I only have 24 hours to use it.. but i guess its better than for it to sit in the freezer and not get used at all.. right?
Does anyone let milk stay in the freezer longer than 3 mos?
Re: Ques Re: Freezer Stash
if it's in a deep freeze it can stay longer, like 6-12 months. What I have in my side-by side freezer is piling up and has now reached the 3 month point, so I started using some of it today. I think 3-4 months is the range for that stuff, so I could let it go a little longer.
I am trying to work on getting some sort of system to close it in so that the outside air doesn't hit it when we open the door...therefore it could stay colder better and last a little longer in the fridge freezer (I think 6 months for enclosed compartment in the refrigerator's freezer). I think a giant rubbermaid food storage would work, but it doesn't hold nearly enough of my stash and the lid doesn't completely close. I have over 200 oz in the freezer and it is only growing, so I'm not sure yet what I'll try to do to make it last longer.
Maybe one day I'll have a deep freeze. Until then, I keep it in the bottom (where the air is coldest) and try to keep it covered up so the outside air affects it less.
I cycle through my stash.
Sunday nights, I use freezer milk. Then I use whatever I pump Tuesday - Friday. Friday's pumped milk goes in the freezer.
This way i'm not always worrying about thawing milk but I'm also using the old stuff
I've heard 3-6 months in the freezer
