Babies getting used to being held?

Am I nuts to think that even at 6 weeks old a baby can get used to being held?

Yesterday we had a family party where everyone saw him for the first time.  Of course, everyone wanted to hold him.  I tried to say that I didn't get want him to get used to being held and everyone insisted that a 6 week old could not get used to it.  Then today all he wants to do is be held.  Am I wrong to think that it was because of yesterday?  Or that a 6 week old can get used to it?  Or am I overreacting cause people did not listen to me?

  • I think your son's wanting to be held today is a coincidence.  Babies don't get into habits at six weeks.  They say you can't hold a baby too much and spoil him until three to four months.

  • They can totally get used to it, but I don't think it will forms any habits at this point.  ILs visited when DD was 3 weeks and they held her for 5 days straight.  For the first few days after they left DD was super cranky and just wanted to be held.  It took a little to get her used to not being held ALL the time, but all is well now.

  • you're overreacting.  He's 6 weeks old.  Sometimes babies like to be held

  • Personally I think you're overreacting. At that age, "want" = need in my opinion. Hold that baby all he wants (he's used to the warm, tight, secure environment of the womb still....in a few months he will be begging for you to let go so he can crawl all over the place.
  • I admit it could be me overreacting because I was getting freaked by everyone wanting to hold him. It was as if they were playing hot potato with him. I guess you could say all I kept thinking was too many germs.  LOL!! Yes, I am nuts.

    i agree.  Hold away!

  • If he were 5-6 months then I would say maybe he is getting into the habit of wanting people to hold him. But at 6 weeks its not a habit. You  might be overreacting a bit.
