Any GD mamas online?

I am new to the diet, and have been doing SUPER well on it... but I have a quick question.

I have been starving all day. My numbers were great, much lower than need be... and I wanna eat more. If I eat things VERY low in carbs, like lots of veggies and cheese... is that ok? I just feel as if one snack after dinner isn't holding me over at all.

  • Do you like the freebie foods? You should have a list of foods that you can eat as much of as you want.

Umm... never knew there was such a thing. My dietician failed to mention A LOT of things that I should know. Honestly, I feel so uninformed about such an important condition.

  • Side salads are considered freebies, diet gelatin, fat free sour cream-cream cheese.

A friend of mine had GD and she was given a list of foods that she could eat all she wanted of and they did not count against her. I don't remember what was on the list, but you might be able to google and find it?
  • I'm actually not doing to well, at all!! I have made none of my fasting numbers yet and only like 1 or 2 of my lunch numbers since starting. Dinner isn't that great either. (Especially after tonight!! 164!! Crying ) I'm preparing myself for my appts Tuesday (OB) and Wednesday (follow-up with the dietician and nurse) to be put on insulin....
  • Not GD, but Type 1 diabetes.  I agree with the PP.  Stick with free foods like cucumbers, celery, green beans, pickles.  Although if your numbers are "lower than they need to be" do you need to eat something more substantial to balence out the low?

I would call the dietician (or another one since the one you have isn't giving you the information you need) and schedule another appointment.  You need to make sure all your questions are answered!

That stinks! I'm the exact opposite of you... my numbers are way too low! My fasting numbers have been anywhere from the 40's to the 60's... that's it! This stuff is so confusing and difficult... they should just assign us personal chefs or something to help out.

I am seeing a specialist on Thursday and showing him my numbers to discuss everything. I do feel as if I am on TOO strict of a diet... because as I said, my numbers are ridiculously low a lot of the time.

I am going to eat some crackers with cheese and pepperoni and then test to see if that helps. I haven't been feeling right this entire diet, but thought it might be from the change in foods... but hearing other people talk, I don't think this is working for me.

Those are too low for a fasting number pregnant or not!!   You def need to get some of this cleared up.  The crappy thing about pregnancy and diabetes is that the hormones make things change sometimes on a regular basis (there were days for weeks on end where I had to daily adjust my insulin numbers)

And if they are running low now, you need some carbs and protein.  Give that baby some sugar!

do you mean your sugars are 140 160? or 40 60???? thats waaaaaay too low. i dont hae GD, but i did work in an ER and that is not healthy to be that low at ALL! you really need to talk to your Dr about that. JMO, but 40 is dangerously low and could put u into a coma!

  • I was told that when I eat, if I still feel hungry to eat more protein.  I usually eat lots of cheese with my crackers for snack and I eat a big piece of meat at dinner time.  Are you eating enough carbs?  I can have 2 carb choices at snack times and 3 at dinner.
  • Ugh... I've been reading forever about GD and I'm doing what they say. I eat the breakfast that the dietician outlined, usually a protein bar or something like that for a snack, then a pretty big lunch, crackers with cheese and meat for another snack... a decent sized late dinner and then a snack before bed.

I still eat carbs, actually probably more than I should at times when I combine some of the things together... and still they are pretty low.

Hopefully I can get some answers on Thursday from the specialist. This stuff is really starting to make me mad.

Soooo weird!!  We're Kimmie and Eric!!!  Love Love LOVE!!

  • Shaw.... Yes, my numbers for fasting in the morning have been anywhere from 40-60, and this morning it was around 80. Then, my breakfast numbers have been higher... and by lunch and dinner they are back around 90 again.

I try to eat more carbs... that still doesn't work. Like, today at lunch, my mom made me pork roast with green beans and mashed potatos and gravy. I had at least two cups of mashed potatos and gravy but my numbers an hour later were only at 90.

If you're hungry, you should eat.  My nurse educator told us that if we weren't getting enough food, we should add vegetables, proteins, or fats, in that order.  I always have a bunch of different kinds of cheeses in the fridge in case I get hungry.

Also, here's my list of free foods:

    bouillion broth

    cilantro, parsley

    decaf coffee and tea

    dill pickles

    sugar free drink mix

    garlic

    sugar free jello

    herbs

    diet soda

    lemon

    lettuce

    mushrooms

    mustard

    radishes

    salsa

    soy sauce

    unsweetened vinegar

    water

  • I'm making myself a huge plate of veggies and ranch dressing. When my FI gets home, I'm going to make another meal (would count as my dinner) and try to eat more carbs than normal and see if it helps any.

I may eat TWO hot dog buns... Surprise

    This!

I am having a grilled salmon salad.  Lettuce is a huge free food.  So its pretty much a HUGE bowl of lettuce with some cheese, mushrooms and stuff.

this brings up a good point.  How low are your numbers?  Are you spilling protein in your urine? If you are then they need to increase your caloric intake.

I was never told I had protein in my urine. I've done a few 24 hour urine tests since the beginning because of past health conditions and nothing.

I really think I need to alter this diet to include more carbs than what my dietician told me... I'm going to try it tonight and tomorrow and see what I get.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I don't feel so 'in the dark' anymore.

  • Veggies are freebies so you can keep eating those.  I talked to my DR because just 1 snack after dinner was not holding me over.  THey told me to have to 2 snacks after dinner because my time frames. My nutritionist told me they dont want me to be hungry and if needed I could eat more protein too.  THey just want me to watch my carb intake. My numbers have been very low though so they are not to concerned.  I would talk to your Dr about adding an extra night time snack or something to the plan.
  • you should be checking your urine every day for protein.  Did they give you any stripes to pee on when you wake up?

Nope... never even mentioned it to me. Once again, something that people around me fail to inform me of. I'm getting sick of this.

    Another thing is...

You might want to have a SECOND snack after dinner.  I do this many nights because I'm so damn hungry.  I mean, if you eat at 7 and then have a snack at 9:30 and then at 11:30 you're starving again, EAT.

And yes, have as much salad and veggies as you want.  I told my dietician point blank that I know there are weight gain restrictions and I know she'd like everything to be low in fat, but ONLY fat makes me feel as full as carbs do.  So I eat as much fat as I want, barring fried foods.  I eat TONS of cheese every day, bacon, etc.

As long as your numbers seem good after eating two cups of mashed potatoes (yum!), I'd say keep doing it.  But it almost makes me wonder whether you truly have GD because I can't eat that many carbs and get away with it!!

  • I second everyones comments to call your doctor - fasting numbers in the 40-60's are definitely too low and you don't want to get sick!

A few of the previous posters mentioned keytone strips to test for protein spilling into your urine. I would go to walgreens or cvs and get some strips. They are like 10-15$ total, and you should test in your first potty of the a.m. If you spill ketones, then you need to add more carbs.

For a while I was diet controlled and I had to get up in the middle of the night and drink milk since I would spill ketones otherwise and fasting numbers would be off.

My carb amounts for each day are: 2 carbs for breakfast and snacks, 3-4 for lunch and dinner.

    Hang in there!

  • Here's the carb index from the usda, I find it pretty helpful as a guide.

I'm still eating more carbs than I should... Tongue Tied ... after reading it.

I agree with this.  It sounds like the GD diet is not good for your system if your numbers have been SO low.  Do you know what your glucose test results were?

Yes, I do. The only two that I failed were the fasting (I had a 105) and the 1 hr. after was two points over the limit (sorry, don't remember the number). All the other numbers were below the GD limits.

I'm going to call the dietician tomorrow to discuss my numbers and ask if I can change up my diet to include more carbs and see what that does. What I REALLY want to do is take a day, eat whatever I want, and check my numbers. I know I can't, but that would put my mind at ease.
