Antibiotics, BCP and Spotting?

12 days ago I started a Z pack for a throat infection. I've been on Yasmin BCP for about nine months.  For the past 2 days, I've had some spotting but I'm not due to start my period until June 10.  Has this happened to anyone on BCP after antibiotics? Also, while I was on the antibiotics, my hubby and I fooled around. lol...it would be too early for this to be implantation bleeding right?  It's only been five days since we, you know.

Re: Antibiotics, BCP and Spotting?

  • my friend got pregnant with her lo while on bc and using an antibiotic...she didnt know that it wouldnt work.

were you ovulating?  i am assuming yes if you are due for your period in 1.5 weeks.... :)  i found out that i was pregnant with ds when i was six days......

  • Antibiotics can interfere with the BCP.  It sounds like you might have been ovulating and the timing could be right for implantation bleeding.  If I were you I'd POAS.

For what it is worth, the whole idea of antibiotics interfering with birth control was based on one case when a woman (on OCP) became pregnant while on Rifampin prescribed by her dentist. There have not been any studies indicating that the typical antibiotics used today (Zpak, Amoxil, etc.) have any interaction with oral contraceptives. That being said, it is still recommended that a back up method is used, and I do tell all my patients (I'm a PA in urgent care) to use a second method while on antibiotics. My whole point is that the chances of conceiving due to decreased efficacy of the pill while on antibiotics is slim...

Yet it happens.  I know of quite a few people who got pg while on antibiotics.
