Anyone from Hawaii?

I have seen a few bumpies from Hawaii.  My husband is about to put in for an assignment at Hickam AFB and just wanted to know about the area.  I am sure it's wonderful, just wanted the inside scoop.

Thanks.

  • hi! i'm in honolulu... my husband is stationed at pearl harbor... adjacent to hickam afb.  if you have any questions let me know, is he coming or you and the baby as well?
  • we would all be coming, if he gets the orders.  We should get there early next year.  One of my biggest questions is, is it as beautiful as the say?
  • i'm not from hawaii, and i don't know about the specific base you mentioned. but, the h and i have been several times (got married there as well), to 5 of the islands, and LOVE it. oahu's probably not the prerttiest of the islands IMO, but it has it's perks, and all of the islands are cool and beautiful in their own unique way. i'm jealous!
  • We used to be stationed there at Pearl Harbor. There are a few people from the nest military newlyweds board that live there. From my experience when we lived there is that yes, it is beautiful, I mean it's Hawaii!!!  But you have to deal with the things that come along with living on an island especially one that is a major tourist destination. Lot's of traffic, cost of living is high, the "locals" don't always love the military presence there. I do definetly miss the weather and all the outdoor type stuff we used to do while we lived there though. It's a great experience to live there even if it's only for a few years.
  • I'm a local and from the area near Hickam AFB (Haleiwa/Waialua). I went to school with a lot of military kids, one of my best friends is a military brat :0)

The town of Wahiawa is where Hickam is, not a great town AT All, but Mililani which is nearby is a nice town with a more suburban feel. Actually Hickam is sort of situated between Wahiawa and Mililani. Hickam is also close to the North Shore for beaches (Waimea is my favorite) about a 15 minute drive. The AFB is also close to the freeway and it doesn't take long, without traffic, to get to Honolulu. The AFB also sits infront of a gorgeous mountain range.

Will you be living on base or off? If off, I would suggest Mililani for homes. Sometimes the locals aren't friendly to the military/tourist presence but it depends who you're dealing with. People in Hawaii move at a much slower pace and sometimes feel the "mainland" way is rude. If you're easy going and not impatient you'll be fine. Just learn to slow down when you're there. When I go home for visits the slowness makes me crazy, lol.

?I'm sort of jealous you get to move there, I'd love to go back for a few years while my kids grow up so they can be around my family. My folks and rest of the family are still there. At least I get to visit, but it's so hard leaving my parents. ?

Let me know if you have more questions!!?

Bran_ham- I believe you are thinking of Schofield Barracks not Hickam AFB. We were stationed at Pearl Harbor which is right next to Hickam AFB, next to the airport. Schofield Barracks is near Milliani on the way to North Shore.

  • There is an airforce base next to Schofield though...I thought it was Hickam turns out it's Wheeler AFB. I'm an idiot, lol. Glad you caught that since apparently I'm brain dead.
