fabric shopping

When you shop for fabric, do you look to see where it is made?

I was looking for minky, and at the store I was at (JoAnne's) it was all made in China.... No (I also noticed a lot of the flannels were MIC too)

Anyone have a source for NON-MIC minky?

And do you think it matters about fabric items (safety)?

Re: fabric shopping

  • I'm afraid I rarely if ever look when it comes to fabric.  Embarrassed  I only have two local choices - Hancock and Walmart, and I'm not a Walmart gal, which leaves me with one store to choose from.  Whenever I look, it seems to be MIC, unfortunately.  You could try online stores if you were interested.  As for the safety?  Who knows.  I don't know that they could get a lot in a fabric that would continue to cause issues over time/multiple washes, but that is based on nothing more than speculation.

  • Fabric is mostly harmless.  In the testing results I've seen, none of them came back with harmful contaminates.  That said, unless you buy 100% organic fabric, you can pretty much bet that it's been treated with formaldehyde to keep bugs out.
  • Except for Cranston Print Works, who operates the only remaining US print plant, every.single.printed fabric (from major manufacturers like Michael Miller, Westminster, Moda, etc) is printed at one of a tiny handful of print plants in Korea.  There are some smaller companies that do small scale manufacturing and hand printing, but chances are, you'll be buying a fabric that was printed in Korea.  There is no way around it.

(And I've STRONGLY considered opening a US print plant, but it's next to impossible).  Oh, and Bali Batiks, are hand dyed in Indonesia - typically you'll see those from Hoffman fabrics.

(And Glad, I've cut huge rolls of fabric that has had bugs flattened in it that were screenprinted over, EWWWW!).
