maybe silly ? about powder/cream

Must you regularly use a diaper cream and/or powder when diapering?  It seems like I have noticed that some of my friends/fam do, but isn't it only necessary if there is some type of rash going on?  Or do you use the powder to prevent wetness?

I am going to be using prefolds with covers and I'm trying to decided what I need to purchase before baby is here.  I have checked out Burt's Bees powder, but I don't like the fragrance.  Can I just use cornstarch if necessary?  And I will use some type of liners if I need cream, but what cream is best?

TIA!

  • We've never used powder - I don't know that it's recommended in general, much less with cloth.  (?)  You can always try a stay dry liner if you think the wetness is an issue (fleece liners work, or if you wanted to make some microsuede liners, they work well, too).  Diaper rash creams, we only use when he's a bit red.  You'll want to find a CD safe cream (although pfs are pretty forgiving).  California Baby is pretty easy to find and CD safe.  We use either Aveeno or Wadela.  I like the Wadela a bit better.  They're not quite as safe as the Cal Baby, but we've never had a problem with it, and I'd imagine on pf you'd be fine without a liner.  Check out www.polkadotsandpinstripes.com for info on CD safe detergents/creams.  Good luck!

I've been wondering the same thing, actually!

It seems silly to put anything on the baby that she doesn't really need.  Powders are supposed to be a no-no b/c of the risk of it getting into baby's lungs, but I've heard conflicting things about whether a cream is necessary.  Our newborn parenting class said only if there's a problem and that (militantly) that it has to be a 40% zinc oxide cream (which I don't think works with cloth!).  Then the Sears baby book says to use A&D ointment for the first month (which is another no-no with cloth!) and then nothing unless there's an issue.

    Oy--very confusing!
