Tripp Trapp vs Hipposmile

I'm trying to decide which of these to get for my 2.5 yo who is outgrowing his baby highchair fast. He is still a little too short for the adult chair so I've found these two chairs which might suit him perfectly. The only major difference I can see in them is price. Has anyone purchased these? Is the quality in the hipposmile inferior to the Tripp Trapp? I've seen the Tripp Trapp at buy buy baby but have not had the chance to try out the hipposmile so if anyone has it I would love to know what your opinions on it are. I am really loathe to spend over $250+ on the Tripp Trapp when I could get one that looks identical for less than half that price. Thanks.

  • We've had a Tripp Trapp for a little over a year now and I have to say we LOVE LOVE LOVE it. DS is small (2.5 yrs, 34 inches, 34 lbs) and it provides the best support for him while he's eating or playing at the table. His OT is expecting in a few weeks and just got one too.

The Hippo looks similar enough - I hadn't heard about it before so I just did a quick google search. It doesn't look like the Hippo offers an infant rail if that matters to you.   The only other thing it doesn't seem to offer is a 5-pt harness.  For us this was VERY important when DS was a bit younger.  We no longer use the shoulder straps, but the straps between his legs seem to be a bit more substantial.  We did have the strap break once and Stokke was quick to provide a replacement.

That being said, the posture benefits just can't be beat regardless of which version you go with.

  • I've never heard of the Hipposmile, but love my Tripp Trapp.  Not sure if I would buy one for a child who is over 2 though.  It's the only highchair I've ever had and we may get a second for DD2 since #1 loves hers.  Otherwise we're just going to put a booster seat on a regular chair for her (I'm just worried because my chairs are really lightweight and I'm afraid she'll tip over if she pushes on the table).

  • i have the stokke and while it looks nice i think its dangerous and a pita. the straps suck, the seat cushion is always fithy and hard to clean and the wood chips easily. my toddler tries to get in and out herself and its not super safe. i have mixed feelings about it. i like that she has her own chair at the table and will grow with her- or dd #2 and it looks good... ut all of these other things make me feel that $250 is a lot for it.
