Babies born at 31 weeks

Has anyone had a child born at 31 weeks? What were some of the complications you faced and how long did your DC have to stay in the hospital. Also what was attempted in order to stop labor? I have went into preterm labor during both pregnancies. I went into labor with DS#1 at 27 weeks and they were able to stop labor, he ended up being born at 39 weeks. I am currently 31 weeks and was just relesed form the hospital for preterm labor. I have been taking terb and now my contractions are starting again. I will be heading to L&D in a few and I am just concerned. Thank you!!

Re: Babies born at 31 weeks

  • I had HELLP Syndrome, so a different scenario from yours. My DS was born at 32 weeks. He needed CPAP (ventilator) for a few days, then oxygen for another week...he had jaundice, anemia and a low white cell count (related to HELLP). He had a Level 1 IVH (brain hemmorage, common in preemies) which has since resolved. He also has reflux and had Group B Strep which developed into sepsis and then bacterial meninigitis at 6 weeks. He was in the NICU for 4 weeks (most of the time to gain weight - "feeder/grower") and then the PICU for 2 weeks for the GBS.

He is now a happy, healthy almost 11 month old and is caught up developmentally.

Good luck to you and we are here if you need support, advice, etc.

  • Simon was also born at 32 weeks due to PROM, which they think could have been related to sudden onset of Pre-E, but we don't really know.  He was on a ventilator for 24 hours, then a nasal canula for 1.5-2 weeks.  He kept having bradycardia due to his reflux and came home on an apnea monitor for 6 weeks.  He also had jaundice and a little bit of anemia.  The biggest hurdle was the feeding/growing part.  Total NICU time was 27 days.  He is now 5 months and reached the 50th percentile for weight at 4 months.  He keeps gaining tons of weight and no one believes me when I tell them he's a preemie.
  • twins born at 30w6d.  PTL and hospital bedrest for 10 days when baby A's water broke.  Normal preemie stuff included a vent for 10 hours, then cpap for 10 hours, nasal cannula for 2 months (we're at high altitude so this is common in full term babies).  Caffiene to help their A's and B's and they had a pretty bad case of jaundice.  NICU for 33 days, didn't start nippling until they were a month old.  They are healthy smart but small 2 year olds now.  No lasting effects of their prematurity.
  • I went on hospital bed rest at 25 weeks for PTL. I was given Nifed, Terb, and another one or two but nothing was working until they gave me Mag. That stuff was he|| but it worked and I held on until 31 weeks, in the hospital the whole time, then baby B's water broke. They were all between 3lbs 7oz and 3lbs 15oz and were in the NICU for 26, 33, and 35 days. They were all on CPAP, room air only though, for 4 days. 2 had to have PIC lines, they all needed the bili lights, 1 needed caffeine. They are now very big and healthy kiddos all are over 21 lbs and hitting most milestones on time or very close. Good luck!

  • Luca was born at 31w1d due to placental abruption.  He was in the NICU for 6 weeks and is now 12 weeks actual.  We were incredibly lucky and had very few health problems.... basically, he was a "feeder and grower" so we just battled with him learning how to nurse.  Once he could take all his feedings by bottle/breast, he was out.  Today, he's healthy and growing so quickly!  He even passed full-term 2 month development milestones at his last doctor's appointment!  Good luck to you!
