Good news:
He's actually got a name. We've decided to call him Oliver Robin. Oliver is actually a reference to the twins we lost in August '06 (you can see what I mean if you read the m/c story in my bio). And Robin is a nod to the nickname we've called him since about 8w - Robinho. (Pronounced Row-bean-ee-o.) It's a random NN - the name of a Brazilian soccer player, go figure - but it's what he's been to us all along, so we're happy to keep it in some way.
Bad news:
He's jaundiced. Pretty badly it seems. Within the next few hours we're going to have billirubin lights delivered to our house and he'll be in them 24/7 unless he's actively eating. Trips to the hospital every day for bloodwork (gee, I love holding my baby as they bleed him). And we've had to switch from BFing (with some supplemental expressed breast milk) to bottle feeding. So far I'm keeping up with his needs by pumping, but I expect we might have to add in some formula. Our biggest problem is that he prefers sleeping to eating, so getting enough food in him is really difficult. It sucks to feed my mechanical baby every 2-3 hours while DH gets to feed the real thing, bwhatever we gotta do to get him healthy. I just hope he'll be able to transition back to the breast at some point.
Anyway, that's us in a nutshell. Parenting has been really hard so far. Sleepless nights are one thing, but watching your kid get sicker before your very eyes is torture. I just hope that we're watching him thrive before long.
Re: good news and not so good news.
I love his name!!
Good thoughts and prayers coming that he gets to feeling better very soon...
Wow. Sorry to hear it:(
Here's hoping he's healthy in no time!
Awww...I love the name Oliver. If my last name weren't what it is that would have been one of my choices. Congrats on making that decision.
But I'm sorry to hear about the jaundice and feeding the breast pump instead of your son. Hopefully the lights will work and he'll be thriving in no time. ((HUGS))
YAY for Oliver Robin!!!
Kira had jaundice too; thankfully it improved quite quickly. She was constantly falling asleep while eating so I understand. Keep trying though, whether through nursing or pumped milk -- breastmilk is the best thing for him to get over the hurdle. We gave her some formula as I worked on my supply for about 4 days that first week, and indeed she got stronger in that time. Eating was a full-time job for us for a long time, so I sympathize.
Another congratulations, and continued best wishes!!!

What a beautiful name! I love it. Oliver. I don't hear that one much. Can't think of the last time I heard it. It's so perfect and special. And I love Robin for a boy. Girls are going to be all over him!!
I know he'll get better soon with all the love and lights you're giving him. Best of luck with bfing and everything! We're rooting for all of you!
I'm sitting here crying ...
I just read your bio ... and I love the name even more. (((HUGS)))
I'm so sorry you are going through this. Yeah I think the hardest part was gaining weight at first (for us) and that was hard to see him go through. Also, it was hard for waking him up to eat - he was very sleepy too. It does get better, so congrats and congrats on getting a name.

I love the name! I had a feeling you'd end up going with Oliver.
And I love that you referenced his nickname during your pregnancy.
I'm sorry about the jaundice. I hope that he is thriving and breastfeeding soon. ((hugs))
BFP with no treatment!
My DS had to be re-hospitalized for jaundice/dehydration the day after we brought him home but after a night under the lights and some formula supplements he was a totally different baby.
I hope everything works out for you, I know seeing them under the lights is tough but he'll be okay
Congrats on choosing a name!
I'm sorry about the jaundice. Hopefully it will be cleared up in no time!
I love the name. Congratulations.
As for the jaundice, DS had it too. He was diagnosed before we left the hospital so he spent the night in the nursery under the lights while I pumped and fed. My milk came in just as he went to the nursery so I had enough milk to BF him every 1.5 hours and pump in between and feed him the pumped milk. He had maybe 4 bottles (a total of 2 oz!) in the 18 hours he was under the lights. He was still sleepy for a while even after the jaundice improved. All in all, he lost over a pound from his birth weight and it took him almost three weeks to get it back.
DS continued bf'ing and is still a breastfeeding at 11 months.
One thing they might not tell you is that even after teh jaundice improves, the yellow tint will remain for almost a month. It starts to improve from the toes up and the eyes are the last thing to return to white.
DS was still yellowy at one month old.
I do too. We went through a rough week right after Cal was born and I understand how scary and frustrating it is. I bet the lights will do the trick in no time! Hang in there and make sure to take care of yourself too.
I love his name!!!

I love the name Oliver. Good choice!
I'm sorry about his jaundice, I hope he gets better quickly.
I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's so hard.
We avoided the bili blanket/lights but just barely. Elizabeth was born last Thursday and her jaundice/bili levels rose until until Sunday, so we had six days in a row of bili and weight checks. We supplemented after each feeding with pumped milk with a bit of formula added in. Like I said in a previous post, I cried when they handed me the formula (nothing wrong with formula, just not what I wanted).
But once we started supplementing, she was able to eat more, which led to more dirty diapers, which led to decrease in bili levels. She still sleeps a ton right now, but she's gaining weight and no longer being supplememted.
So just hang in there. I hope you reach the turning point very soon. .
Beautiful strong name for a beautiful boy!
So sorry about the jaundice. Hope he is over it soon!
firstly, i LOVE the name..so so much
great choice!?
secondly..i am sure with the food, and the lights, he will round the corner very very soon with the jaundice..it happens so often, and luckily can usually be remedied with those things..food, light. as soon as he gets a bit more energy, he will be awake and eating in no time..then he will get the hang of the breast..
you are doing awesome, and will be seeing him thrive very very soon

I love the name Oliver and I love it even more after reading your bio!!
I hope he is feeling better soon. ?I will keep you all in my thoughts. ?
Love the name!
So sorry he is sick. I hope he gets better very quick!
ugggg. ?my babe was under the lights the entire time we were in the hospital and it sucked so bad to not be able to hold her all the time...they couldn't even bring the lights to my room so she was in the nursery all by herself. ?
?
i also understand how hard it is to get them to eat when they're like this--i swear the elevated bili makes them sleepy!! ?hopefully all the work you're both doing now will pay off quickly, his numbers will go down and you will be back to "normal" quickly.
((((hugs))))?
