How much could DC speak at 20 months?

DD says a few words, even combines a few into sentences. But otherwise, I really can't recognize very much she says.

She babbles all the time and is even quite vocal. But what on earth is she saying?

How was your DC at 20 months? Did they have highly developed speech patterns or was it somewhat a guessing game?

Thanks girls..

  • I think your DD probably talks more than PAC, who is 20 months. He only says a handful of words, and says things like "all done" (ah dah) but mostly I have no idea what he's saying.

  • DS had not too many words.  Enough so that he didn't need IE, but he so rarely used them.  And, he was not talkative at all.  He really didn't start talking until he was 3 y/o.

DD had tons of works at 20 mos and was putting together sentences and using them.  She's 23 mos and and speaks really well.  She can still be shy and doesn't speak much at daycare, though.   Lately she's being using quite a bit of babble that I can't understand.  I think she just wants to talk like a big kid so she just rattles stuff off that sounds impressive to her.

I've seen everything from talking in five or six word sentences to having a handful of words. I wouldn't stress about it. As long as she has more than ten words, I think he's right on track.

I remember 20 months well, because that was right before her baby sister was born.

Gina would put words together, but often I was the only one who could understand her. She also is quite vocal (read: LOUD) and never stops talking.

I saw a BIG leap right around her second birthday.

  • DD is and was a blabbermouth.  But we were the only ones who could understand most of what she said until she was closer to 2.5 or so.
  • Thanks girls :)  I'm hoping she'll get a bigger vocabulary soon!
  • DD was doing quite well at 20mths. BUT she had nothing at 18mths. It really did seem to explode overnight.

My mom tells me not to be concerned because I was such a late talker. Maybe we'll look into some word exercises for her (?)

  • DS had almost nothing at 20 months, but by 24 months he didn't qualify for EI services - there was a HUGE jump
  • DS is 20months and is finally starting to use some words.  Most of his talking is babble still though.  He always looks very serious when he "talks" so he must be saying something very important!!  So cute!

My niece just turned two and has had a huge vocab. for a while and speaks very clearly.  I guess it just varies a lot between kids.

There's a little boy in our neighborhood with one of those over-the-top moms (you know, their DC is the best at everything type). Well, we saw him yesterday (he's only 3 months older than our DD) and I swear, he could hold an entire conversation. Full blown sentences, asked questions, told a story. Sheesh. It was enough to make you feel like the worst parent on earth.

Well, as the embarrassed mom to two kids like that little boy Embarrassed, (but hopefully not like the mom!) I can tell you that just like I take very little responsibility for my kids being good talkers, you should NOT think you are the "worst parent on earth!" I think it has very little to do with what you do and a lot to do with the child.

  • By 2 years DD only had a handful of words.  She didn't really start to talk or string sentences together until closer to 2 and a half.  Now she talks a blue streak.

  • Nora didn't talk much until after she turned 2.  Our doctor wasn't worried because she was developing right on schedule or ahead on everything else.  Now, she won't shut up at just over 2 1/2!

Yes, my MIL always has to mention how well DN is talking.  I don't think she means to "rub it in", but it does get very annoying!

  • Kate talked in sentences at 20 months and had hundreds of words.  But she didn't walk until 18 months.  I don't take responsibility or credit for her "good" talking OR her "late" walking.  Kids develop at their own pace.  It sounds like your DD is right on track for 20 months.

What Wellfleet said. My kids were late walkers too!

  • Funny you should mention that! DD was a very late walker! She didn't get her butt going until 14 1/2 months! We thought we were going to have to carry her everywhere!

(omg.. I think I used up my daily quota of ! in that post)

  • at 20 months DS said very little, still a lot of babble.  Now at almost 23 months he says a lot more and even a few 2 word phases but much of it you wouldn't understand unless you are around him all the time.  Some things are clear, but a lot are not.

You know, another really important thing to remember is that now, as the mother of an almost 5 year old, I can't for the life of me remember who talked in sentences at 20 months and who didn't till two and a half. Seriously. They all talk, eventually!
  • Chloe about 60 single words, a few 2-3 word phrase, but it's just now becoming frequent.

My boys - only 1-2 words (2 of them were well within the normal range by their 2nd birthdays though, my 5 y/o was non-verbal until 3 1/2)
