3rd Trimester

Did you help paint?

We are going to start painting the baby's room this weekend - finally. My doctor said its fine for me to help as long as the room is well venilated and the smell doesn't bother me, yet everyone I talk to is like oh how dare you help your husband paint, gasp the fumes - oh that is horrible - oh don't overdo it -...um hello the doctor said it was fine...I figure if anything I can sit and do the trim parts and he can roll - it won't be that strenuous.

So did you help paint?

Re: Did you help paint?

  • Yes and I am planning on painting our new office in the basement today too!

  • Yes, I helped but my mom did most of the work.  I just took a break when my back hurt or if I was tired.
  • Nope but DH did a great job.
  • Help?? Honey, I painted the whole d@mn thing!! To be fair, DH was outside dealing with the more strenuous task of leaf raking and other random yard work.

  • Yes I did help DH paint!!  The room is empty and we had the windows WIDE open with a fan going and it didn't bother me one bit.  The funny thing is that I was "attracted" to the fumes.  Don't know why, but I made sure not to stay in the room longer than I had to so I wasn't purposely inhaling the fumes.  If your doctor said it was fine, then go for it!!

Actually I did the whole thing myself!! DH is such a procrastinator!! I knew it would never get done unless I did it myself.  I opened all the door and windows, we also got whatever that special paint is that's supposed to be safer for mom and baby. DH totally yelled at me when he got home, but at least my nursery is done!

  • We painted our 3rd BR last year, in anticipation that it may become a nursery soon.

However, I did help DH paint one of his rental properties a couple of weeks ago.  Area was well-ventilated, and the fumes didn't bother me.

  • Yes, we used Benjamin Moore Natura paint.  It is a zero-voc paint; a little pricey, but I highly recommend it.  This stuff is like glue and it has next to no odor.  I was impressed.

  • I painted the entire thing myself. I opened the window and put a fan in the window blowing outwards. Plus the paint these days barely have any fumes. We used Valspar paint and you could barely tell someone was painting in the house.
  • I tried but he wouldn't let me.
  • Nope, but not because I was worried about paint fumes or over exertion.  We had some other areas in the house we needed to paint (hallway, bathrooms) so we just hired someone do those and the nursery for us.
  • Yes I helped do the entire room. We just opened the 2 windows and had fans. I had a mask but it got annoying after awhile.

  • I definitely wanted to, but my DH would not allow it.  Sad

nope but Dh did a great job!!

  • Nope.  The baby's room was MH's special project.  We picked out things together but he is the one who did everything from painting to installing new flooring to putting the furniture together.

  • Yes, I painted the lower half of the room and DH painted the upper half.  He's very serious about not allowing me to stand on ladders/chairs.  LOL  Anyway, we used noVOC paint (Harmony by Sherwin-Williams).  It covered beautifully and had virtually no odor.
  • I painted the entire nursery myself with VOC-free paint.  I was fine!

I painted the nursery, all except along the ceiling b/c we have 9ft ceilings. We used Benjamin Moore Natura which is No VOC, mainly b/c I have a reaction to most paints. I loved this stuff. It is ridiculously expensive, but we have painted every room in our house and I have broken out in hives EVERY time w/the exception of the nursery.
  • No, I didn't help paint, but that was because DH works 3 - 12 shifts each week. So he has extra time to do things around the house. We did buy special paint from DutchBoy that doesn't have the bad fumes in it. I couldn't smell the paint when I got home from work.

  • we aren't done yet, but since being pregnant I have painted several rooms.  DH stinks at painting!!
  • Yep.  We just finished this weekend.  4 different colors at various times.  the fumes didn't bother me, but I did take breaks when my feet or back started to hurt.

My job was touchup on the woodwork, too (I'm much better at that than dh).  I usually do this laying on my belly.  It was a lot harder sitting up!

  • Yes. I helped with the trim and areas where I could just sit and help. We just kept the window open and the fan at high speed, and the fumes didn't bother me at all.
  • Help. Ha. I painted the whole room. And not just one coat but I did the Kilz which took two coats, and painted the room. Which also took two coats. My husband was OOT and I wanted it done so I just did it.
  • Yeah....I actually did all of the painting!  We didn't do whole walls...just touch ups, baseboards and doors.....but I did it all.  I just made sure the window was open, and I did it slowly over a few weeks...not all at once.
  • I mainly helped taping the room and helping with touch ups and stuff. My husband and MIL did the most of the work. It was the best Monther's Day present ever. My baby's room is the most complete room in the house.

  • I did it myself, DH thinks painting a bedroom for a baby who won't know the difference is silly, so instead of arguing about it I just said, whatever and ploughed ahead without him!
  • we aren't going to paint ours b/c we rent ... but when we move, i would love to paint the next one!
  • Yes, I did... but we chose a no-VOC paint anyway.
  • Yes I did.  We used low odor paint.  Just be very careful.
