North Carolina Babies

An ignorant question awaits you inside...

The question has to do with babies, diapers, and water.  I know babies don't wear their regular diapers to the pool otherwise it would absorb the pool water and weigh the baby down.  However, what are my options?  What's the difference between a swim diaper and a regular diaper?  Does anyone have any recommendations for what brand they use?  I am clueless on this one and google didn't help at all!

  • A swim diaper has no?absorbent?material in it. ?Its sole purpose is to hold in poo, so it should fit the baby very tightly around the legs.?

I would recommend a cloth swim diaper (we like iSwim, but Target has them as well) if you plan to be at the pool alot this summer. ?They come in smaller sizes than the Huggies and Pampers swim diapers and they are super easy to clean and disposable swim diapers can get expensive if you are going to use a lot. ?

I have used both Huggies and Pampers and don't have a preference, but do check the sizes. ?They barely fit DD last summer and she was close to one.?

  • ditto Evans, you just want to hold in poo.  We use iplay swim diapers (I think that's what Evans meant).  They actually do have a tiny absorbent pad, but it doesn't hold much.  So like on the beach when they're not really in the water, but you don't want a regular diaper either, they're perfect.  Some swim diapers don't have any absorbency, so if they pee it would run right out, which is fine if they're in the pool, but no so great if you're not.  Eli was too small for disposable swim diapers last year and now that I'm hooked on the iplay I have no desire to try them.

    Yep - that's what I meant!?

  • We use the iPlay swim trunks with the diaper built right in.  Very convenient, and you just throw it in the wash like you would a regular swim suit - no special washing.  Like the PPs stated, swim diapers have little to no absorbency, so if you'll just be sitting at the beach and not getting wet, you might want to put him in a regular diaper.

  • Ditto PP; but check with the pool you're going to, a lot of pools are starting to not allow 'sposie swim diapers anymore.

Regular diapers literally explode when they absorb the pool water.  Not fun to clean up (speaking from experience!).

  • I bought a bag but was able to end up reusing some of them [after they dried in the sun for a day]. If you want some to take, let me know and we can arrange a meet up.
