What is the first thing you would think if you were introduced to a child with this name? No need for "NMS." I'm not looking to name a child based on a similar style consensus (not being rude, just sayin'!).
Salem automatically reminds me of the Salem Witch Trials and nothing else. So, it makes me think of witches, death, trials, etc. That's what I'd think of.

First thing I would wonder is why you gave a little girl with scottish ancestry an arabic boy's first name. Granted, the arabic name is spelled slightly differently (Salim) but is pronounced similarily. I have known two male Salims who were both arabic.
Then, I would think of hysteria and women being burned at the stake. Not really a lovely connotation for a child's name.
Salem is really very witchy. You could definately do Tabitha with another middle name. But even Salem by itself is awfully black magic. The two together is a bit much.

If I were introduced to this person the first thing I would think of is that it was your daughter. Then would think of a town near me named Salem. I live in NH, close to MA and would never think of the Salem Witch Trials. Honestly, I think it's hard to ask ?s on this board because these names are so theoretical. If people really tried to envision a name on a baby/child responses might be different. JMO.
Salem sounds like a boy name. It reminds me of Sabrina and the witch trials. Tabitha reminds me of Dh's ex-girlfriend, but I think it's a pretty name. I rarely watched Bewitched so it doesn't remind me of that.?

Except Salim is pronounced differently than Salem. Salim is Sah-leem, and Salem is Sail-em. They aren't pronounced the same.
I think of witches also.

Salem witch trials and the show bewitched...........
Yes. Having the two names together just screams "witch."
Yes, I would have to agree. If it were just Salem, I could almost see it as a place-name, but otherwise it makes me think of Salem witch trials and Bewitched.
If it was Salem with another mn, or Tabitha with another 1st name, it would be different but with both- definitely witches! But, how often do you really hear a person's middle name? I like it!
Tabitha-daughter of Samantha the witch on Bewitched
ditto

Re: Too gothic?
This.
Salem-witch trials
Tabitha-daughter of Samantha the witch on Bewitched
Witch trials, her parents were into sorcery or they were vamipires, the cat on Sabrina, Bewitched, Halloween.
Nothing that reminds of a cute happy little girl.
I did go to HS with a Tabitha though...it's a fine name by itself..just not with Tabitha.

Salem reminds me of Salem, MA, and the Salem witch trials.
Tabitha seems like more of a pet name to me.
Salem- the cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch or the Salem witch trials
Tabitha- super cute name. reminds me of a sweet girl?

Tabitha - also witchy name as that was the name of this stupid witch in that soap opera Passions.

BFP#3 ~ 4/15/12, EDD 12/21/12 ~ DD born 12/22/12
This. But, I still kinda like it! Go for it if it's what you like!!
Ditto.
the combination of the two names is too much, I think. But either name alone is nice!
Salem sounds like a boys name to me...well not really a person's name at all. I just think of Salem witch trials.
ditto
What about Tabitha Ruth?
*sits patiently, hoping someone else gets the reference*
My first though when i saw it was that's a mouth full.
Then I thought Salem for a girl? To me it sounds very much like a boy.
And thirdly - witches
