Everyone hates DH's favorite girl's name

So my husband has been in love with the name Raven since way before I was pregnant. Originally I was fine with it, since he let me pick the boys name... but none of our friends and family like the name, and have been quite vocal about it. Its making me start to go back on it.?

His family has a tradition of naming children names that end in "n" (Taryn, Justin, Shannon, Robin, etc.), so we are trying to stick to that. ?Some suggestions we have received that I like as alternatives are Brooklyn, Ashlyn, Devin, and Fallon.?

What do you guys think? Let him have Raven, and forget what everyone else thinks? Or go with an alternative??

Re: Everyone hates DH's favorite girl's name

  • You should post on this board Baby Names

I've no suggestions but Raven is NMS.

personally it's not my style, but if you like it and your husband loves it, who cares what anyone else thinks??!

  • Its your baby, therefore name her what YOU like. Period.
  • My vote, let him have Raven. It is your baby who cares what everyone else thinks.

  • What do YOU think about Raven?  If you both like it, then I'd say who cares.  If you don't really love it (even though 'he gets to pick it') then I wouldn't use it.
  • We picked our names and its what we like.  Its your kid, name it what you what.  I like Raven.....

  • This is why we decided to keep the name a secret until he is born!! I'd just start telling people you are undecided about the name and do whatever you guys want to do!!

  • This is exactly why we are keeping our name a secret from family especially! I don't want to get tainted by their comments or disapprovals!

I say stop talking about it and go with Raven but don't tell them until she is born! They can't complain about the name when they have a tiny beautiful little girl attached to it! Well let's hope anyways....!

I think you two should go with whatever you like.  My brother keeps telling me that our girl name Lydia, rhymes with chlamydia but I just ignore him.  I love it.  If you two love it, stick with it.  I think it's a good name.

  • I like Raven better than the other 4, except maybe Ashlyn.  Devin and Fallon sound like boys.  Fallon is actually a very common last name.

  • Ditto to what everyone else said.

As far as MY opinion of Raven, I teach three different girls with the name, and there are at least double that in my school -- honestly, I'm a little tired of hearing it, but that'll be true of many, many names.

  • I think Raven is cute!

Thanks guys. I think this is a great idea!?

  • Raven is NMS.. I think bc I knew a girl in HS that changed her name to Raven and went completely goth.

I love Devin.  It was on my short girl list.

But like others said, go with what you like!!  The baby will grow into that name and later you can't imagine her being called by any other name.

  • Whose opinion about your child is more important to you...your husband's or friend's and family's?  Also, who are you more willing to upset/disappoint?  I think people who comment on baby names in any manner other than "Adorable, I love that!" deserve to be smashed in the knee caps.  And Raven is very cute for a little girl.  My close friend had a baby a year or so ago and made up her DD's middle name, and I never said a word, not my place, not my kid, none of my business.

  • I think Raven is a fantastic name --- and you should stick with it if you both like it.... Smile

my husband and I have names picked out but we're not telling anyone until after birth because we don't want any scrutiny getting in the way of naming 'our' baby ...

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with Raven. If you both like it, you should use it :)

  • Name your baby what YOU TWO like and forget about other people's comments.  It's not their baby.  Long before we had DD we were talking names and when we said Kylee would be our first girl, MIL went on and on about how horrible it was.  We still used it and she's in love with her granddaughter regardless of her name.  Raven isn't my style, but FWIW, I knew a little girl named Raven and she was cute.

  • Something else we've done with our previous two, is not share their names, but when people ask (my IL"s are VERY opinionated) we tell them the most horrible names we could think of.  Last time we told them the baby would be Herod or Herodius (a not so great biblical couple).  That shut them up pretty quickly.

  • It is unique. There is nothing wrong with it. It is stuff like this that makes me think that we shouldn't tell people the name until the baby's born. I really don't want anyone else's opinions. It might ruin it for me like it is for you.
