2nd Trimester

XP: NT Scan...was yours covered by insurance

I posted on 1st Tri, but since many of you have had your NT scan, I thought I would post on 2nd Tri for more answers. TIA.

I know genetic testing is not covered unless "medically necessary." I am in the process of appealing a denial...I had genetic testing done for the Jewish genetic diseases given my husband and I are Jewish.

I told the insurance company about my upcoming NT Scan and they said it may not be covered. I understand that this is not considered "medically necessary" but what has been your experience with your insurance company?

Re: XP: NT Scan...was yours covered by insurance

  • Mine was covered. My insurance covers everything all i've had to pay for so far is 2 copays for special?procedures. Which is 10 bucks so no big deal.

  • Mine was covered 100%  I didn't even have to pay a copay.  My OB office requesting for an authorization from my insurance company and they approved.  I kept a copy of the authorization too just in case I got a bill.
  • No, but we have an HSA through Goldenrule and we've since decided that they suck, royally.

  • Yes, but I did have to pay a copay since it was done at the perinatologist's office instead of my OB's.

  • Mine was covered. My insurance considered it a routine procedure.
  • Thanks for your responses.

  • Mine was covered - I believe they also considered it routine though.
  • My insurance does not cover them and I wasn't even offered one.  But that was okay, we weren't planning on having it.

The blood work (quad screening etc) is covered.

My doctor has told me that everything that is tested for in the NT scan and most things in the blood work can be found on the big u/s around 20 weeks.  So we opted to only have the u/s, not the blood work or the NT scan.

Perhaps your insurance company considers the scan to be redundant since you will have the u/s around 20 weeks.  And I've never heard of an insurance company not covering that u/s.

  • In CA it is by state law as of April.
