Parenting after a Loss

confused about first solids

I thought my pedi said after the different cereals, move on to green veggies and work our way to orange veggies.  Then on to fruits.

The more I talk to people IRL, it seems like no one actually does this.  Both the women I work with started with applesauce in the oatmeal as well as by itself.  I also talked to a mom today who has a baby 2 weeks younger than Lilly (and it's her 4th) and she said a couple days ago they started sweet potatoes and he ate the entire container.

Lilly is starting to enjoy oatmeal (we finally figured out that she only likes it with water, not milk), but only eats a little bit and it has to be timed right (about an hour after taking a bottle).  I'm so afraid of screwing something up and this takes way more effort than I was expecting!

Can someone clear this up for me?  Is there a "right" way to do it or is it all just a matter of my baby and her preferences?

Re: confused about first solids

  • 1st.... solids should be fun. When you sit down to eat, give her a few spoonfuls so she's included.?

We don't follow the every 4 day rule because we don't have any food allergies. Neither does dd. Once we thought she might have had a reaction to sweet potatoes and we stopped giving it to her for a few weeks.

There is no right or wrong way to do it. Just go by her cues & preferences. And again.... have fun with it. She may not eat any of it or she may devour all of it on any given day.?

We started with dinner because that was the easiest to time for us. Her daytime naps & nursings weren't on a strict schedule, but dinner is always around 6pm in this house. So when we sit/sat down we'd feed her as well. It always turned out to be about 1.5-2 hours after nursing.

For breakfast it turns out to be about 1.5-2 hours after waking if she hasn't nursed in a while. If she nurses around 5am and wakes for the day between 7-7:30, she gets a solid meal instead of nursing. Then nurses again at 9.

Please also remember that the same way you get thirsty while eating, your dd might as well. We found that giving dd some BM in a cup while she was eating also helped her take to solids easier. ?

  • Thank you sooo much!  I'm glad you mentioned about her getting thirsty.  When I give her oatmeal, it makes ME so thirsty watching her eat it with nothing to wash it down.  I wondered about maybe letting her try a sippy cup with a little water, even just to play with.  Is water OK now?  Should I put her formula in it instead?
  • There's no real "rule" to solids.  I desperately wanted our pedi to give me a sheet on what to do but she said just to have fun with it.  And that's what you need to do -- have fun with it!

We started with oatmeal, and then went to sweet potatoes and carrots.  I think we only started fruit (applesauce) after giving veggies a good solid time to get some grounding.

Water is OK now... we started it at 6 months... now she totally guzzles it down.

Enjoy!  Solids are a whole new adventure.

Our pedi said they've done studies and haven't really come up with a definitive way to introduce solids.

Andrew's first solid was sweet potato.  We then tried oatmeal cereal and it gave him an upset stomach.  So we went on to avocado, banana, and now pears.  I may go back to try the oatmeal again in a few weeks.

I use the 4-6 month old chart on www.wholesomebabyfood.com as a guide.  I printed it out and just mark the date we introduced the food to keep track of what he's tried and what he hasn't.  It has helpful tips and do's and don'ts.
