Chalkboard paint

Has anyone used this?  I want to make one wall in the nursery a chalkboard wall.  Fun for friends and family to write messages now, and fun for my son when he gets a little older.  Any suggestions?  It's a decent size wall and I really don't want to screw it up!  Should I use primer if the walls are already white?  Tinted primer?  Several coats?  Any help would be great!

Re: Chalkboard paint

  • I would ask the people at Lowes or Home Depot for advice on that.  I love the idea, but have never used anything like that before.  GL

  • My sis-in-law used this for an area in her daughters room.. She did not use primer...and I know she had to use several coats and it still does not look quite right.  I would ask someone at Home Depot?? or wherever you plan on buying the paint from...I would use a primer...maybe a tinted one would be a good idea...if it is a large wall or area I would do a little more research online to find what has worked best for people who have used this paint. • i think it's cute, but it could get SUPER expensive. They come in quart size cans, and they're about $12-$15 a can. I had to use two to do the back of a door.

  • You have to use at least two coats of the chalk paint but more would be better, or repaint it every year or so b/c everytime you erase something you take a bit of the paint with you and you can see the paint underneath. Its expensive stuff so consider only doing a certain portion of the wall or maybe a door.
  • just another option if you don't want to do the whole wall b/c it's expensive and hard to get the exact look you want.... here they have used framed dry erase boards which erase a lot better than chalk board paint does. you could also buy inexpensive chalk boards at Michaels and frame them with moulding and hang them on pegs if you definitely want the chalk option.
