i want to get dh some camera stuff for father's day and i need help picking stuff out. we have a canon rebel. he has photoshop, a zoom lens, plus whatever came with the camera. i know he wants a tripod because he says the camera w/ zoom on is hard to keep steady. he also needs a new camera bag. he's been just using a backpack. and i saw punk link something in her post yesterday called a speedflash that looked interesting. i could get him all three but i'm not sure which tripod or camera bag. any recs or other camera things he might lust after?
Re: photography junkies, i need help!
I have this bag and LOVE it, I dont know about the tri pod though, I dont have one

for sure get a speedlite.
and i rec this one
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-Speedlite-II-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001CCAISE/ref=sr
bc not all speedlites have the ability to bounce the light off a wall behind you, but this one does.
id get a 50mm lens as well. just the 1.8 is fine and under/aruond $100. its much better than the stock lens that came with the rebel.
I love crumpler camera bags - they have a nice aesthetic and look like a regular messenger bag, not necessarily a camera bag.
Also love my gorillapod - nice and compact.
Have you thought about a remote? It's a great thing to have in one's photo arsenal.
i totally just added that to my amazon cart. i love it.
You are going to find a ton of variances in tri-pods. Some have a fully moveable base which is awesome, but pricey. Personally I went for this one. It does what I need it to do.

As for camera bags, again you are going to have a ton of choices, depending on how much you want it to hold. I have this one:

My step-mom is a professional photog, and she has this one which she likes cause of the easy access to the camera:

i was looking at that one but couldn't tell if it was too boxy. is it awkward to carry around?
Just my personal opinion, but if he mainly takes pics of your baby (i.e MOVING TARGET!) the speedlite will come in a lot more handy than a tripod.
The speedlite will actually 'freeze" the motion and can look very natural if used correctly. I want just about ever piece of photo gear in the world, but a tripod is not on that list because there is no way my son would still be there by the time I adjusted it!
I also highly recommend any of the lenses I have listed in the "in my camera bag" block on the sidebar of my blog. The 50mm is a nice upgrade from the kit lens, the Sigma even more so.
You are a great wife, I wish my DH would be asking these questions for me somewhere
that's the one you posted yesterday, right? the reviews seem good... i think he'd like that one!
i think he might already have a 50mm lens... that sounds familiar. i'll have to check when dd wakes up (asleep on my lap)
yeah thats the same one - and the same one pp has "in her camera bag"
DH got me a 50mm f1/8 lens for Mother's Day and I LOVE it! I highly recommend that!
As for camera bag. I did get a bigger bag like the one pp posted from amazon, and I dont like it. I really want to just have something small and compact that can fit the camera and a few other things. The bigger one can fit a lot of stuff, but I mainly take pics of DD not like I'm a professional photographer. I just need the camera and maybe an extra memory card and batteries. I dont carry around tons of lenses or tripod. I got a holster bag for my camera. Got it from cameta camera on ebay for $20 and I love it. Its perfect!
i think your mom's bag is his style... i know he likes backpacks. the tripod looks good too!
yup!
i was thinking about getting all three. he takes a lot of pics of dd, but also loves playing around with landscapes so that's what he'd use the tripod for i think. i'll go check out your blog!
and thanks!... dh is pretty awesome himself:)
I've borrowed the 430EX II flash and it's awesome. It's great to point it up and let it bounce though, because a full frontal flash in the face (pun unintended) is going to make the image look "flat" so you may want to pick up the diffuser Amazon suggests too.
If my annual review goes well, I'm picking that up STAT.
Also, pick up that 50mm f1.8 lens. It does not have image stabilization, but it's fast, so that kind of counters the lack of IS. It's sharp and you can BARELY tell the difference between the f1.8 and f.1.4 images, especially if you never print bigger than 8x10 and even then it's miniscule (bokeh is better in the 1.4 IMHO). It's only $100 as opposed to the $400 you have to pay for the lower f-stop. The pictures in my signature were taken with that lens. It is the primary lens I use when indoors. I use my zoom lens when outside
I'm bookmarking the bag that someone posted above me though... that's a good one and the one I have isn't nearly big enough to carry all the equipment I'm snatching up. DH is gonna murder me :P

YAY i feel slightly validated for my choices lol
I had that bag and I thought it was awful and a huge PITA to carry around.
yeah, i decided it looked too awkward for him. i went ahead and ordered hom the lowepro fastpack 350 that murphyec's mom uses. and i got him the speedlite. decided he can get his own tripod.
and that pillowcase dress/ babylegs combo in your siggy is perhaps the cutest girl outfit i've ever seen. your kids are gorgeous!
