Hi Everyone! Long time lurker here with a question. My little girl was diagnosed with relux yesterday. Her pedi suggested that we start with rice cereal in her bottle and if that does not work try soy formula for 2 weeks. After I have tried both of those, then we will talk about medication. She seems to be growing just fine, as she is only spitting up once a day. She a little porker, went from 5lbs 10oz at birth to 8lbs 9oz as of yesterday so that is not a concern. I have done a lot of research and it seems like she has "silent reflux" where she is looking to eat to help soothe her throat.
Anyway, we have been doing the rice cereal and it does not seem to be helping much. She is still having problems after eating and is just miserable. You can hear the formula coming back up and then she just starts to gag. I feel terrible for her.
Has anyone had any luck with the cereal? Any idea how long I should give it before switching formula on her once again?
My poor pumpkin pie is miserable and I am willing to do whatever I have to to make her comfortable.
Thanks!
Re: Reflux
She is currently on Gentlease. We switched from Similac Advanced to the Emfamil because the pedi thought that might be the problem.
He told me to call him at let him know how it wsa going and if we need to, then we can get her in and get the medication. I just hate that I have to wait so long
My poor baby.
She is up all day and so fussy!! It seems as soon as I can get her calmed down from the previous feeding, it is time to eat again, and the fun starts all over.
Thankfully DH takes the night time so that I can get some sleep.
Hopefully your little one gets better!
We just started cereal yesterday, So far, no luck. DD spits up constantly though, and it is a tremendous amount. Pedi wanted us to try cereal to see if it would help her keep more food down. She's sometimes eating every 45 minutes because she's hungry from all the spitting.
She started on Zantac 3 weeks ago, and it's made a huge difference with the pain from reflux. She now takes most bottles without arching her back all the time, gagging, and screaming. I still hear the milk coming back up sometimes, but she doesn't scream out in pain.
Good luck figuring out what's best!
We have had the same exact problem! We put our LO on many different formulas, including soy with rice cereal that we were mixing in. We are now back to Enfamil AR and are doing much better. She still has some reflux, but it is staying down. I didn't want to put her on any meds, only as a last resort.
Good luck!
My LO was diagnosed with reflux and a milk sensitivity at about 5 weeks (had symptoms since about 2 weeks but because she was so young we wanted to wait a bit). The Dr immediately gave us a Zantac presc. and we have stopped breast feeding and put her on Similac Soy. Both have seemed to make a huge difference! She was having similar symptoms. She wouldn't spit up a ton but swallow it instead. So she had the pain twice. the fussiness would start about 45 minutes after she was fed. She wasn't screaming just fussy and uncomfortable enough to keep her from napping. I went through about 4 different types of formula before trying the Soy with success. She still isn't the best napper but getting better as she gets older.
