1st Trimester

Anyone taking progesterone supplements?

I was just told my progesterone was low - about 16 at about 6 weeks, and I have to take a supplement. Is anyone in the same boat?  I'd love to hear success stories, or know of any useful websites to research information about this.  Thanks.

Re: Anyone taking progesterone supplements?

  • Yes, I am taking 200mg of prometrium 2 times a day.  My level was 13.4 when I was taking it just once a day so my dosage was increased.  I've had 2 miscarriages before this pregnancy.  The second one was a definite prog. issue because my level was low but my level wasn't tested with the first one so I'll never know if that was the problem but I have a feeling it was.

OBs like to see your level above 15 so you should be fine starting the supps now.  GL!

  • I just finished taking mine yesterday (you will go off them in the 10th week).  I had no adverse effects from taking them, aside from being really tired ALL THE TIME.

My pregnancy has continued right on track and I've got a healthy little 10 1/2 week baby in there with a strong heartbeat.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much. This is my first pregnancy, and am trying not to worry about this too much.  Good luck to you!

Oh yes, pure exhaustion while on them.  Some days it's hard to get out of bed.

  • My OB put me on prometrium (300 mg a day) from the day we got our BFP this time to hopefully help sustain a pregnancy. With my CPs by the time they did any testing my levels were already falling so he said it was better safe than sorry.?
  • I am on them 3x per day - pretty standard for an IVF cycle. I will be on them until 16w - which is an excessively long time, but usually they take you off between 10-12w when the placenta takes over. They can make your bbs even more sore, extra bloat, can cause spotting and tiredness. GL!

  • Yes, I was on progesterone supplements from weeks 6-12.  At 6 weeks, my progesterone was 12 and climbed to 28 within 48 hours of starting the supplement.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! You have made me feel a lot better. Thankfully I am between jobs, so I have plenty of extra time to nap if the exhaustion does strike.  I have been having terrible nausea - did the supplements have any effect on the morning sickness for anyone?  Thanks again!
  • I took it until the 2nd semester and all was fine GL.
  • My "supplements" were actually suppositories so no effect on morning sickness whatsoever.

  • I was taking 200 mg once a day until last night. My progesterone was low and the dr. thinks that was the problem. With my last pregnancy it was at 8. With this pregnancy I got on it as soon as I found out I was pg and my levels have always been really good.

  • Yep, I was at 16 when they tested so they put me on 200mg once a day.  The next time they tested I was at 24 and they were happy.  I took progresterone with my DD also.

I asked the same question on the Success after a Loss board when they first put me on it for this pregnancy (They didn't test the level last time, they just automatically put me on it because of a previous mc.)  Some of the girls said that their doctors wouldn't even consider 16 low (that made me feel a little better).
