3rd Trimester

question for those of you bfing

I plan on starting out breastfeeding and seeing how it goes. ?Are those of you that are planning on breastfeeding going to have a can of formula on hand just incase...?

also if you are going to pump and store what are you storing the milk in in the freezer...??'

?these may be seriously dumb questions but thanks...?

Re: question for those of you bfing

  • I plan on having formula available. You just never know. Also I am going to pump as well, and freeze it.

  • I intend to exclusively BF, but I have bottles and formula on hand just in case! ?

Yes, I do plan on pumping and freezing, but I've heard that it's difficult to pump at the beginning bc you're too busy actually feeding. ?You'd have to pump immediately after feeding, from what I've heard. ?I bought milk bags for the freezer... they may even have specific ones for the pump you got... plus you might want to get the little tray for the baggies too. ?

  • The hospital will most likely give you samples - I recommend using those first if necessary.

Get the breast milk storage bags (can be found found with other BF stuff at places like Target).  I reusable containers are a pain to clean and take up more storage space.

  • ok i forgot a question too... how the heck do you know what formula to buy... there's way too many choices, it's not like i can try it out, see what tastes best... lol i don't know why i didn't think about these things a lil sooner...?
  • I plan on breastfeeding. I also have a few cans of powdered formula I bought with coupons/on sale. I want to be able to go out/sleep & if I don't have milk stored I will at times give formula. I also am bringing a few ready to feed cans to the hospital in case for a medical reason I need to supplement (otherwise I don't plan on supplementing on BF is established). However I do not like the kind of formula our hospital provides & want to use the kind we will use at home at times.

I plan on pumping & storing in the medela breastmilk freezer bags. They attach to my pump & I think will take up less room in the freezer, will be easier to organize.

  • I made sure there was no formula available in the house...I was worried it would be too tempting once it got hard.  I was right.  At one point I was tearing apart the house looking for a sample...then I got a grip, calmed myself down and went back to nursing him.  I'm glad it wasn't around.

I stored milk in the freezer, in milk freezer bags.

  • I'm not going to have formula in the house because it will be a huge temptation if bfing isn't going so well.  I'm 100% committed to making it work and I don't want to let myself have an easy out during the hard first few weeks or so.  I have a ton of small bottles that attach to the Medela pump that are made to be stored in the freezer.  They're the small ones that don't hold much with yellow screw-on tops.

Apparently you wont know what your LO will want until he/she comes. ?I've heard from formula moms that some brands made their baby coulicy (sp) or too poopy, or too gassy... it depends on YOUR kid. ?With that being said, buy one (or use the sample as pp said) and then wait it out. ?Hopefully you wont even have to use it and you can BF as planned!??

This is extremely personal & I think its a lot of trial & error. Something may work great for one baby & nto so well for another. Ask around to see what friends think.

Personally our hosptial uses enfamil & I am not a huge fan of it, I find it makes the babies gassy & it smells awful. We plan on using goodstart.

  • No, I won't have formula available! If breastfeeding doesn't work, the next best thing is bottlefeeding with bm. That is what this baby will get.

  • I already have a few samples of formula put away, just in case, but I hope I don't need them.  I will store in the fridge and freezer (if I can produce enough) If I am producing enough to be able to freeze it, that would be great to save it for future use, but who knows.

This is exactly what I learned in my bfeedig class! They warned us of this. So I am not going to have any formula around either!

I have a few cans of Similac on hand, but I don't plan on using them. I'm fairly certain I'll be able to breastfeed successfully again :)  I use the Medela breast milk bags for storage. If he is going to get a bottle, it will be breastmilk.

    This exactly.

  • I have a can of similac formula that they sent to me and I have a coupon for some enfamil. My bff gave me some medela freezer containers to store milk in.

I never thought about that.. I think I will be giving my SIL all the samples that I have that way I wont be tempted to use them. But she does live right next door, so if it gets really bad I will probably go over and get some.

  • I don't want to give or throw away the formula samples because they don't expired until baby will be a year old, and I might be giving formula by than.  Formula is so expensive...
