Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

14 months...still no words

I'm starting to get worried.   DS has yet to say a true first word.   He babbles all the time and says mama, dada, baba....but they are just babble.   Many times, we think he was said a word but he never repeats it so we don't count it(like when he said Ur-ee while looking at our dog Murphy...we thought oh he's trying to say Murphy...but he has not done it again...so it was just babble)

He can point to objects, follow simple directions(get the ball).   if you ask him where's mommy, daddy, murphy, grandma, etc...he runs to that person.    He waves hi and bye.    He uses gestures to communicate basic needs/wants....like the other day he wanted to go up on the couch.   He ran to the couch, smacked it with his hand and then ran to me with his arms up.   I asked do you want to go on the couch and he grinned and giggled.

He just hasn't spoken yet.    We go to the dr on June 23 for his 15 month appt.     I'll be talking to the pedi about this.

  • My almost 15 month old is the exact same way. ?Only babbling. ?I know he understands us and follows directions (well, sometimes :)). ?I'm starting to get worried too. ?We talk to him all the time, read tons of books, etc. ?I am wondering if it has somethign to do with his ears...he's had 4 or 5 ear infections. ?I've heard from a few people that once their DC got tubes or the ear problem fixed, that the language exploded. ?We have our dr appt at the end of the month and I am going to bring this up and possibly push to see an ENT. ?

    It's frustrating though :(?

My little guy has had only 1 ear infection and that was in the fall.    So in his case, I don't think it's his ears.

  • My son is the same way... a little younger though. But my doctor was not concerned because he is sooo active and busy- he just hasn't slowed down enough to think about what he actually wants to say. I am not gonna worry!

  • DS says a handful of words, but after reading your post, I really would not worry if I were you. He obviously interacts and communicates well. Obviously you'll talk to your Dr soon but in the meantime, I'd say try not to worry. I'm sure he will talk sooner or later!

  • DS is almost 15 months.  He said Hi and waved tonight.  First for both! now the trick will be getting him to remember it tomorrow.  I would not worry.  I have been told it is pretty normal to not have words yet.  DS's only other word is Mama and it is when he is crying only so I don't think that really counts.

I don't think it's anything to get too worried about now.  My 17.5 month old daughter just started saying bubba for bubble.  That's it.  She babbles a lot otherwise, uses signs, follows directions, has conversational babble (with intonation).  The pedi wasn't concerned at the 15 month check up.  She said at the 18 month check up we'll re-evaluate.

My DS is 13.5 months and doesn't saying anything either.  He is only just now starting to follow directions, and he won't use any signs (even though we have tried many times to teach him...plus he has his sister to mimic and chooses not to).

If my two get closer to 2 years and still don't use expressive language then I'll start to worry, otherwise I just think they'll do it in their own time.

    Well......my 19 month old doesn't say much either :(

He says mama, dada, hot and ocassionally he will say cup and hello.

But......like your DS he understands all directions/commands. He can point things out in books and knows where things are in the house.

My pedi is not concerned at all. He is very active and b/c he is cognitively doing fine, she said we are not going to worry until we hit 2.

We are going to the ENT next Monday (he has had lots of double ear infections......) and I am really hoping that the tubes are going to help with his speech.

I worry too, but I have lots of friends with boys and they have all reassured me that their boys did not really start talking until they were closer to 2.

  • My DS will be 2 in September and still doesn't talk. All he says is Dada and he babbles. We found that he has fluid in his ears which could be part of the reason he isn't talking. We took him to an ENT last week but had to leave because DS flipped out with the hearing test. I have to take him back again soon. We started EI this week with a speech therapist so I am hoping it will help. My DS is very smart and knows what he wants and follows direction with no problem. I was told that he should be hearing better then he is and he should be saying words by now. I wouldn't worry about it right now, your DS is still young.

YOu have nothing to worry about and I am speaking from 1st hand experience here.  My older DD did not say a thing until she was 17 or 19 months old and now at 3, she is non stop talk.  She really took off with her talking at age 2 and by 2 1/2 was pretty much caught up with her classmates at daycare.  EI was involved for other reasons with my DD and was always watching her speach closely. What they told us is that before age 2, what is more important than words is the overall language comprehension and if your child understands directions and communicates in some ways which from what you said, your child is totally doing.  My DD was never even a big babbler.
