What do you think? My DH came up with it because his family is Irish. BUt I really dont know if I like it. I actually dont but he is stuck on it. He also Likes Owen which to me sounds weak. What does everyone think
So you have an obviously Irish last name? If you do then I would say you could get away w/ it. Otherwise, you could name him Finnegan and call him Finn! Personally, I like the name Owen better. GL!
I think you have a lot of time left to come up with a name that you both like. My son is Finn so I am partial to the name, but not Finnegan. Owen doesn't sound weak to me.

I LOVE the name Finn, but I prefer it on its own. If it had to have a longer name, I'd choose Finian but I still strongly prefer just Finn, like Finn McCool.
I love Owen, but it's very popular, and if you think it sounds weak, then don't do it.
Finnegan I wouldn't do for two reasons:
- Finnegan's Wake, by James Joyce, which then became an Irish folk song which is quite well known. It's about Tim Finnegan, who gets drunk and falls off a ladder and everyone thinks he's dead, they have a wake, it becomes apparent he's not dead, people start throwing whisky around, mayhem ensues, etc. (great drinking song though). See https://www.thebards.net/music/lyrics/Finnegans_Wake.shtml.
- I live in Canada and there was a puppet (dog) named Finnegan on Mr. Dressup which everyone 20-40 in Canada will know about.
The drinking song would be the main reason though...
Are you wanting to call him Finn? How about Finlay?
I like Finn, but Finnegan sounds too much like Phinergan (a very common drug) to me. A lot of times people get Phinergan during labor for nausea. I think anyone medical will make this connection.
One of the singers in my favorite band named his baby Finnegan and they call him Finn. His last name is very Irish (McCann). Not sure I would use it if the last name isn't Irish sounding, tho.
FWIW, Daddy is a singer of Irish/Celtic/Newfoundland traditional music, so it fits in with his family history very well.

Yep, this is all I think about! I have a good association with the name b/c I LOVED Mr. Dressup, but I don't like it for a child's name. Finn is cute though!

Finn is starting to become a (relatively) popular Irish name on the East Coast. I know one kid who is just Finn, another who is Finian, but no Finnegans. I think it works best with an Irish last name, but can also work with an English one.
I wouldn't worry about the Finnegan's Wake connection -- it's a funny song, but it's no reason not to use the name.
I like Owen too and it doesn't sound weak to me -- but maybe it's because I know a few Owens & none of them are weak people.
I am not sure how I feel about Finnegan- it seems a little odd to me unless it was a family name, however I do love the name Finn and would prob just go with that alone

Finnegan just makes me think of that annoying Michael Finnegan song "he grew whiskers on his chin again". I prefer Finley or even better Owen.
