1st Trimester

Anyone NOT having the NT Scan?

We have the option but to do the u/s we have to go to a hospital an hour away because they don't have any higher level machines or trained tech's to do it closer.

EDIT: We will still have the blood tests done to test for the chromosome abnormalities regardless.

Re: Anyone NOT having the NT Scan?

  • I did not have one. I didn't even get to see my OB until I was past 12 weeks, and she didn't even mention the option of the NT, so I asked and she seemed to think it wasn't neccesary in my case, and mentioned CVS and Amnio later on if I was concerned.

  • I'd ask your doctor.

We were told that the test was useless without both the b/w and the u/s.  I also believe there's the option of the quad screen done in 2nd tri if you don't want to do the NT u/s

  • My OB also didnt give me the option. So I dont think we will push it.
  • We're getting the AFP test instead. It's a blood test that happens around 16 weeks and checks for all the same things as the NT scan.
  • my OB gave me the option and if I didn't feel the need to do the 1st tri testing that I could have the 2nd tri testing done...

  • We're not doing any of the testing. I don't feel like I need to know ahead of time to be prepared. We'll just take everything as it comes.

My dr made me go to this whole prenatal testing class that their office offers. They said we could do either the blood tests and no u/s or the blood tests with the u/s or nothing.

  • We're not doing the NT scan because insurance doesn't cover it and we're not high risk so we decided not to pay for it.  We are doing the quad screen at 15 weeks.

  • Thanks ladies! It seems like everyone on here does them. It's nice to know I won't be the only one not getting the NT scan.
  • We didnt do it with DS and we probably wont with this one either...
  • We are not doing any type of genetic testing. Insurance doesnt cover it because in my case its not considered medically nessisary. And personally if the scans showed that there was a possibility there might be something wrong, I don't want to go through the rest of the pregnancy worried that something might be wrong. No matter what the results said it wouldnt change my descion to carry or not carry. But like everything else its a very personal descion

  • MEEE!! :) i have no interest in knowing and have never had an NT scan.

that being said i have always had a ton of ultrasounds though so i never *needed* one to just see my baby like some people claim to do

My OB never mentioned it either.  Maybe they don't do them?

  • We've elected not to do any of the genetic testing.  I figure, I'm pregnant, it's a miracle that I got pregnant and we'll love this baby no matter what the outcome.  Plus I'm a terrible worrier as it is and there's no need to place any additional stress on me or the baby worrying for 9 months about having a certain % chance of having a baby with some kind of issue.

That's exactly how I feel, too.

  • I am not.  They didn't offer it and I knew the BW could give false positives.

Nope we don't qualify for one as apparently I am not high risk and it would cost $500.  We are not interested in terminating if something was detected, so there really is no reason for it other than to help us prepare for a special needs child.  I imagine that anything extreemly severe and life threatening would be detected at the 20wk scan.  I think it would be awesome to get to see the baby again, but I can just go in there and get another ultrasound for free on Fridays.

I'm not doing any of the testing. Whatever the outcome of the test, it's not going to change anything for us, so I would rather not do it. Right now I would rather concentrate on being as healthy as I can for myself and the baby, and I don't want any added stress worrying over taking a test, or which test to take.

  • I didn't want to get it but since I am high-risk the dr. strongly recommended it, so we are going to get it.  I also have to go to a perinatologist where I will get all my scans done (extra u/s) including the NT scan.
