Would your DH like this?

My DH's birthday is the Friday before Father's Day, so I was going to combine his gifts into one big gift since it will be his 30th B-Day and his first father's day with two girls. ?My parents told me this weekend they would like to go in on it too.

So, I was thinking of getting him a driving experience at Lowe's Motor Speedway. ?He doesn't really like NASCAR races, but loves to think he could be a driver. ?I am always telling him to slow down on our long trips so I really think he would like it.

Only problem, he needs to learn to drive a stick before the end of August. ?Any idea where the heck I could go to get him to learn that? ?I don't know of anyone who has one that would be willing to let us borrow theirs (not that I would blame them one bit).?

Re: Would your DH like this?

  • My DH would love this. I'd make sure he's very comfortable driving a stick before paying. Do any of your neighbors have a car with stick shift? What about his co-workers?

  • I did that for DH and he LOVED it. We purchased the DVD and Photos as well.

Sorry I am not help on the manual driving - DH alread knew.

  • I think that would be an awesome gift!  I'm assuming you are going to let him know why he needs to learn to use a stick right?

Honestly, learning to drive a stick (for someone that already knows how to drive) isn't really going to hurt anyone's clutch.  It's when people drive wrong all the time that they burn them out.  If I had one I'd let him use my car to learn.  I learned on my mom's car and drove it for years and never had to replace the clutch.

What about getting a rental car for the weekend?  It would add to the cost, but may be a good solution.

I think he could learn quickly too, it is just a matter of finding one. ?I know how to drive one, so I can easily teach him. ?I just need to look around for options and renting definitely crossed my mind because I don't think he would do damage to it at all - maybe just stall a few times.?

  • Can I pick on him though for not knowing how?  Because that's such a manly thing to know!  If it were my DH I'd pick on him all the time!  Or does that just make me mean?

  • My DH would love it.  As far as driving a stick, hmmm...I'm with MrsMikey, could you get a rental car?  I learned to drive a stick by backing in and out of my dad's steep drive way.  It was on a hill, but was safe.  If I cut off, I wasn't going to back into anyone etc.

It is an?embarrassing?fact to him and he would probably be a tad mad at me I posted it on here, but it was an important logistical part to my question!! ?I don't need to pick on him because he is annoyed enough at himself about it, but he never really had the opportunity. ?He is one of five kids, so his parents always had big vans and they just didn't make them in stick and I sold my manual right after we started dating, so he never really had an opportunity. ?

I completely understand, and I was just kidding.  I'd never say anything to him IRL.  But I'm sure alot of people these days don't know how, because there just aren't alot of manual cars on the road anymore.  My mom made me learn, in case of an emergency.  I totally agree with that and will make sure my kids know how.  And so they can drive NASCAR one day :)

Oh, you can learn on a go cart.  Know anyone with one?

  • My Honda Accord is a stick and you guys could definitely borrow it sometime for an afternoon or weekend b/c we currently have an extra car and I can drive our Pacifica.

Don't worry, my DH also has no clue how to drive a stick.  He's just never had any stick vehicles in his family and he's really too tall for my Accord so he's never had any interest in driving it.

Thanks Wendy!! ?I promise we will take great care of it. ?I will definitely take you up on that once the new baby gets here and things settle down - I just found out there are some dates later in the year as well, so if we can't get it done by August, we have a little play. ?I think he will be a really fast learner and I owe you a ton. ? Lunch is on me next time :)

  • My DH would LOVE that!!  I know some rental car businesses have cars with a manual transmission.  Perhaps you could rent one for the weekend?

ETA: Looks like you got it all figured out!  Big Smile

  • DH would love this idea also.  Although he's not into NASCAR he's big into sports cars.  I'm planning to do something like this for him at some point (just not sure when).

  • I am late on this...but I think it is a great idea for a gift and any man would LOVE it!  But, I would say that in order for him to enjoy it and not be frustrated....i would think he would really need to know how to drive a stick and know how to drive it very well!  My DH races ( not NASCAR, what word doesn't exsist in his vocab) at VIR and various auto cross events.  I can drive a stick, and I do every day, but i am not experienced enough to take it out on a track - does that make sense?  There is so much more to racing a car than just driving one!

That is just my 2-cents...great job though on thinking of an AWESOME gift!!!
