1st Trimester

they gave me a prescription...?

I thought I was going to be able to hold it together, but yesterday I finally gave in to the spotting I had over the weekend, and freaked out totally. The spotting had been getting heavier and heavier (as in light flow by Monday), so I called the dr and they saw me yesterday afternoon, even though I had an appt for this morning. I just couldn't handle it anymore.

So, I went in yesterday, and the NP saw me, poked around a little, and said "Yep, you've been spotting, and it feels like you're about 7 weeks." Tell me something I don't know, lady!!

So after that very informative 8 mins, they sent me to have bloodwork done. She said if my levels were high enough that I could come back in today for an ultrasound, and if they weren't, I would have to come back for more bloodwork. So, I call today, and they're having me come back in.

Of course, in the meantime, the spotting has magically stopped. So, now I just look like a crazy person.

I would be feeling better about the spotting stopping, but when I spoke to them today, they also said my progesterone is low, and gave me a prescription for prometrium. What the heck? Is that something that happens alot? Anyone else on this stuff? I'm so anxious, I hardly slept last night.

Maybe I'm overreacting. I''m really really trying to hold it together here, but I'm getting no help from the dr, and I feel like this one just isn't going to pull through. Help?

Yes, prescriptions for progesterone supplements like Prometrium are very common. Progesterone is a pregnancy-supporting hormone that normally is supplied by your corpus luteum - basically the place the egg hatched out of in your ovary. If the CL isn't producing enough of it naturally, a supplement may help sustain the pregnancy until the placenta can take over.

I'm sorry you've had such a scary experience... I hope everything turns out well. GL

  • Lots of girls on here take progesterone.... me included.  I take it due to a history of m/c and for some peace of mind but it's also prescribed commonly if your prog levels are on the low side.  How much are you taking?  I'm on 200 mg twice a day.  It makes you very tired but it's only taken until about 12 weeks.
  • I am on it due to my past issues.  My progest. was at 14.9 and 15 is the ideal number so they put me on it.  I't suppose to help keep your levels up and help with the growing of a healthy placenta.

I'm sure they can give you more answers when you go in for your ultrasound.

Also if you post on the high risk board you can get more information.

  • I'm also on prometrium due to history of CP/m/c. I can't isolate any s/e to it, nothing that you wouldn't expect normally from being pg.?
  • I think other girls on here have been put on progesterone if it was too low & everything turned out ok.  At least the bleeding has stopped. Thats got to be a good sign!!  GL & try to relax.  (I know easier said than done) Smile
  • I do not have any answers for you about the meds they put you on. ? (((HUGS))) I know this cannot be easy, remember every PG is different. One of my best friends has two healthy little girls & she spotted with both of them . Do not loose hope?
